OVERVIEW
Vertex is currently accepting applications for one full-time, permanent Accounting Analyst in Sherwood Park, AB location. The successful candidate will provide financial expertise and support to the Controller; playing a key role in overseeing all reports, financial functions and process improvement opportunities.
CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS
- Relevant post-secondary education in accounting combined with 3–5 years of progressive accounting experience in a complex, high-volume environment.
- Strong practical knowledge of full-cycle accounting, including journal entries, reconciliations, financial statements, invoice coding, assets, liabilities, revenues, cost of sales, administrative expenses, capital expenditures, intercompany transactions, and GST/HST.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills are mandatory, including PivotTables, VLOOKUPs, XLOOKUPs, macros, formulas, and linking data between worksheets and workbooks; experience with query tools and AI is an asset.
- Experience with complex ERP and accounting systems, including data entry, data extraction, analysis, and reporting; experience with Maestro software is an asset.
- Strong knowledge of financial, operational, and cost reporting, including variance analysis, expense trends, budgeting, forecasting, and business process improvement.
- Experience in transportation, trucking, or related service industries is strongly preferred; supervisory, team leadership, coaching, or mentoring experience is an asset.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, organizational, and decision-making skills, with exceptional attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to effectively communicate financial information and build strong relationships with operational management, vendors, agencies, and financial and non-financial stakeholders in a fast-paced team environment.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Complete daily, weekly, and monthly accounting activities, including journal entries, invoice coding, reconciliations, analysis, and financial reporting to ensure accurate and timely income statements.
- Lead and support the month-end and year-end close processes for the division, including financial reports, reconciliations, audit schedules, and supporting documentation.
- Prepare and analyze financial, operational, and cost reports, identifying variances, trends, and opportunities and providing meaningful insights to support business decision-making.
- Support budgeting, forecasting, and operational planning through financial analysis, reporting, and interpretation of accounting and operational data.
- Investigate and respond to financial and accounting inquiries, working effectively with internal departments, management, vendors, agencies, and other stakeholders.
- Perform reconciliations and coordinate the timely and accurate payment of Lease Operator accounts, ensuring completeness and accuracy.
- Identify and implement opportunities to improve, streamline, and automate accounting and reporting processes, systems, data analysis, and internal controls using Excel, query tools, ERP capabilities, and AI where appropriate.
- Support the implementation of accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls, while providing assistance to team members and performing other duties as assigned.

- This position will be located out of our Sherwood Park, AB location.
