Associate Director of Research Analytics
Job Description
The Associate Director of Research Analytics is a key role within Notre Dame Research (NDR) responsible for advancing data-driven decision-making across the University’s research enterprise. Reporting to the Director of Research Effectiveness and Analytics, this position transforms complex research administration data into actionable insights through analytics, business intelligence, data visualization, and predictive modeling.
The Associate Director supports research leadership, colleges and schools, departments, centers, and institutes by developing reporting solutions, strengthening data integrity, and advancing analytical capabilities that support the University’s growing sponsored research portfolio. This role also provides direct leadership and development of a team of Business Intelligence Analysts while collaborating with stakeholders across campus to promote a culture of data-informed decision-making and continuous improvement.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the development and implementation of research analytics strategies that support institutional planning and operational decision-making.
- Develop and maintain dashboards, reports, data visualizations, and analytical models using tools such as Power BI, Tableau, or similar platforms.
- Create forecasting models and trend analyses to support planning related to research funding, proposals, awards, expenditures, and indirect cost recovery.
- Translate complex research administration data into clear, actionable insights and presentations for University leadership and stakeholders.
- Oversee institutional reporting efforts, including sponsored research portfolio reporting and contribute to external data submissions such as the NSF Higher Education Research and Development (HERD) Survey.
- Partner with research administration, finance, information technology, and institutional research teams to improve data models, reporting processes, and analytics capabilities.
- Develop and maintain automated data pipelines and analytical workflows using SQL, Python, R, or similar technologies.
- Establish data governance practices and quality standards to ensure accuracy, reliability, and consistency of research data.
- Evaluate emerging technologies and identify opportunities to leverage automation, artificial intelligence, and advanced analytics to improve research administration processes.
- Supervise, mentor, and develop Business Intelligence Analysts by providing guidance, managing workloads, and supporting professional growth.
- Serve as a strategic analytics partner and technical advisor across the research enterprise.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Data Science, Statistics, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Information Systems, Business Analytics, or a related quantitative field.
- Minimum of five (5) years of experience in data analytics, business intelligence, research analytics, institutional research, or a related field.
- Experience developing dashboards, reporting solutions, data models, and analytical tools.
- Experience supervising, mentoring, or leading technical staff or business analysts.
- Proficiency with SQL and at least one programming language such as Python, R, or SAS.
- Experience with business intelligence and visualization platforms such as Power BI or Tableau.
- Experience working with enterprise data systems, data warehouses, and complex datasets.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to interpret complex data and identify meaningful insights.
- Ability to communicate technical information clearly to executive and non-technical audiences.
- Strong leadership, collaboration, and relationship-building skills.
- Excellent project management and organizational abilities with the capacity to manage multiple priorities.
- Commitment to data integrity, innovation, and continuous improvement in support of the University’s research mission.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's or Ph.D. in Data Science, Statistics, Computer Science, Business Analytics, or a related discipline.
- Experience working within a research-intensive higher education environment, particularly in sponsored research administration.
- Familiarity with electronic Research Administration (eRA) systems, research metrics, and national reporting standards such as NSF HERD.
- Experience with advanced analytics, automation, artificial intelligence, machine learning, APIs, or cloud-based technologies.
