Business Analyst
Overview
Reporting to the Supervisor, Production Support, the Business Analyst provides day-to-day support for business areas using in-house and customized off-the-shelf (COTS) applications. The role involves investigating and resolving moderately complex application issues, identifying root causes, implementing solutions, and providing interim workarounds when needed.
The Business Analyst works closely with business units to gather requirements and collaborates with technology teams, vendors, software providers, and Knowledge Management Services (KMS) to support tactical and strategic production initiatives. The position ensures application reliability, data integrity, and assesses the impact of business process and technical changes on integrated systems.
Additionally, the Business Analyst may participate in product teams and corporate projects as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) or Project Business Analyst, supporting application upgrades, platform migrations, and other initiatives by providing analysis, recommendations, and business-focused solutions.
Responsibilities
- Identifies stakeholders of the work, how they are impacted and what their needs and roles are to effectively engage in the effort.
- Facilitates effective communication between business stakeholders and technology resources. Translates moderately complex business/technology information into simple, clear and accurate language to ensure understanding by technical and non-technical audiences.
- Gathers requirements by facilitating meetings, interviewing, and collaborating with stakeholders and subject matter experts to ensure business requirements are clear, concise and relevant and generates related artifacts.
- Liaises with Knowledge Management Services (KMS) as a SME in developing associated procedures, documentation, and training for users.
- Performs System Integrated Testing (SIT) on application changes to ensure requirements are met, data integrity is maintained and works with other integrated production support applications.
- Leads complex initiatives to analyze current behaviour, gather and validate requirements, and perform impact assessments. Collaborates with the production support (ILI/BIPDSA) team and IT support team to bring forward cost-effective and quality resolutions.
- Develops test plans and test cases.
- Performs user acceptance testing (UAT) for technical changes, operational requests and data patches on production support applications.
- Coordinates the communication and implementation of solutions to impacted user areas, as a project leader.
- Validates proposed solution for alignment to business needs, requirements, and impacts to operations, processes, technology, vendors, partners and clients.
- Participates in sprint and cycle planning with the agile team.
- Creates and updates application specifications, system use cases, business use cases and/or associated business rules and system rules for multiple production support applications.
- Analyzes product backlog items or bugs and creates user stories or technical user stories on the agile framework.
- Manages production support tickets for multiple applications from start to implementation including defects during project warranty period.
- Maintains a high level of understanding and knowledge on multiple in-house and COTS applications, data mapping on integrated applications and data utilized by various business areas to support initiatives that enhance, improve, and maximize the cost-effectiveness of various business processes.
Qualifications
Education & Experience:
- Certificate or diploma in Business Analysis, or a related discipline.
- Three years of related analytical experience conducting process analysis, documenting system and business requirements, and performing complex data analysis.
OR
- Degree in Business, Management, Commerce, Information Technology, or a related discipline.
- Two years of related analytical experience conducting process analysis, documenting system and business requirements, and performing complex data analysis.
- Education in business analysis is an asset.
- Education in project management is an asset.
Technical Knowledge and Skills:
- Knowledge and experience in the insurance industry is an asset.
- Good communication skills (verbal, written and group presentation skills) to communicate complicated technical issues and solutions in a clear, concise and understandable manner for both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Good skills in facilitating meetings.
- Organizational skills to implement agreed plans by prioritizing and multi-tasking.
- Working knowledge of requirements gathering techniques and testing methodologies.
- Advanced analysis, problem solving, and critical thinking skills.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office tools (Word, Excel, DevOps, SharePoint and Visio) and knowledge of SQL tools, and enterprise data warehouse concepts.
- Experience and knowledge in agile practices, scrums, and Kanban is an asset.
- Experience providing production support to multiple applications is an asset
