Job Description

Job Location - Gurugram/Noida/Mumbai

We are seeking an experienced Biodiversity Impact Assessment Specialist with ~4 years’ relevant experience to join our environmental consulting team in India. The role involves planning and delivering biodiversity baseline surveys, impact assessments, mitigation and monitoring plans for infrastructure, energy, mining, and development projects to meet Indian regulatory requirements and international standards (e.g., MoEFCC processes, Wildlife Protection Act, Biological Diversity Act, IFC Performance Standards, IUCN/CBD guidance).

Key responsibilities

  • Lead and/or support biodiversity baseline studies and field surveys (fauna, flora, habitats) across project sites in India.
  • Design and implement survey programs using standard methods (camera trapping, point counts, transects, quadrats, aquatic sampling, vegetation mapping).
  • Identify species and habitats; assess conservation status using national lists and IUCN Red List; prepare species accounts.
  • Produce technical biodiversity chapters for Environmental and Social Impact Assessments (ESIA) and stand‑alone Biodiversity Impact Assessments (BIA).
  • Apply impact assessment methods and the mitigation hierarchy (avoidance, minimization, restoration, offset) and develop Biodiversity Management Plans (BMPs), Habitat Restoration Plans and offset proposals where required.
  • Conduct field-based monitoring and compliance audits, including biodiversity monitoring protocols and reporting.
  • Use GIS and spatial analysis (ArcGIS/QGIS) to map habitats, protected areas, corridors and sensitive receptors; integrate spatial outputs into reports.
  • Support permitting and clearance processes (forest/wildlife/biological diversity clearances) and prepare documentation for regulators and clients.
  • Liaise with stakeholders — local communities, government agencies, NGOs, and multidisciplinary project teams — and contribute to stakeholder consultations.
  • Contribute to client meetings, deliver presentations, and provide training and capacity building for project teams and stakeholders.
  • Ensure quality control of data, analyses and deliverables; adhere to health, safety and environmental policies during fieldwork.

Qualifications

Required qualifications & experience

  • Master’s degree in Ecology, Biodiversity, Environmental Science, Forestry, Zoology, Botany or related field. Strong undergraduate degree acceptable with exceptional experience.
  • Minimum ~4 years’ professional experience in biodiversity surveys and impact assessment work in India (field and desk-based).
  • Proven experience preparing biodiversity chapters for ESIAs or BIAs and writing technical reports for clients and regulators.
  • Hands‑on field survey experience (terrestrial and/or aquatic) including species identification and standard field methods.
  • Competence in GIS (ArcGIS or QGIS) and mapping; basic data analysis skills (Excel, R or Python preferred).
  • Knowledge of Indian biodiversity laws and regulatory processes (MoEFCC, Forest Conservation Act, Wildlife Protection Act, Biological Diversity Act) and international standards (IFC PS, IUCN).
  • Good written and verbal English. Local language skills (Hindi, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Bengali etc.) a plus for stakeholder engagement.
  • Willingness to travel frequently and undertake extended fieldwork under varied conditions.

Desirable skills

  • Experience with specialist survey techniques (camera trapping, acoustic monitoring, telemetry).
  • Experience designing and monitoring biodiversity offsets and restoration projects.
  • Familiarity with conservation planning tools (e.g., Marxan), habitat modeling, or remote sensing.
  • Experience working on infrastructure projects (roads/rail/energy/mining/ports) and understanding of construction-phase mitigation.
  • Experience with permitting/supporting approvals from Indian authorities.

Behavioural competencies

  • Strong report-writing and presentation skills; attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines.
  • Team player who can work across multidisciplinary teams and with external stakeholders.
  • Problem-solving mindset, adaptable, and able to work in remote/field environments.
  • Commitment to ethical, inclusive and environmentally responsible practice
