Data Scientist x 2
- Sydney, Brisbane, or Melbourne Location
- Hybrid Working Model
- Seeking highly engaging Data Scientists with strong corporate domain experience
About your role?
As a Data Scientist in Westpac’s Data, Digital & AI (DDAI) environment, you will turn ambiguous questions into practical analytical and machine learning solutions. You will work across discovery, experimentation, validation and deployment, with enough autonomy to own defined use cases and enough support to keep growing.
The role is designed for practitioners who enjoy building. You might create a predictive model, forecasting capability, optimisation approach, NLP workflow, GenAI application or decision-support tool. Whatever the use case, the goal is the same: a useful, explainable and maintainable solution that people trust and adopt.
You will collaborate with engineering and platform specialists across Westpac’s hybrid cloud environment, using a predominantly Microsoft-aligned stack while selecting fit-for-purpose methods rather than chasing novelty.
The impact you can make …
- Deliver models and insights that improve customer, risk, productivity or operational outcomes.
- Help business partners move from broad ambition to testable hypotheses and measurable success criteria.
- Increase adoption by making model behaviour, trade-offs and limitations understandable.
- Contribute reusable code, evaluation patterns and delivery assets that make the next use case faster and safer.
What you’ll be doing …
- Proven ability applying real-time Data Science solutions to real-world commercial and business problems, with evidence of solutions that moved beyond analysis into use.
- Advanced Python and SQL skills, including data manipulation, modelling, testing and reproducible workflows.
- Sound knowledge of statistics, experiment design, machine learning evaluation and common failure modes.
- Experience with libraries such as scikit-learn, XGBoost, TensorFlow, PyTorch or equivalent, selected according to the problem.
- Exposure to Azure Machine Learning, Azure AI services, Azure OpenAI, Databricks, Dataiku or comparable cloud platforms is valuable.
- Practical understanding of version control, APIs, data pipelines, CI/CD, model monitoring and MLOps concepts.
- Ability to explain what you built, why you chose the approach, how it performed and what business outcome it enabled.
- Commitment to responsible, secure and explainable use of data and AI in a regulated environment.
What do I need?
- You own defined data science use cases from problem framing and data exploration through modelling, validation and implementation support.
- Able to build robust features, experiments and evaluation frameworks using Python and SQL.
- Can apply classical machine learning, statistical modelling, forecasting, optimisation, NLP, GenAI or other methods when they genuinely fit the problem.
- Work easily with engineers to package models, expose services, integrate pipelines and establish monitoring.
- Able to use cloud services and approved platform patterns across Azure and connected hybrid environments.
- You can write clean, testable and reviewable code using Git and modern team delivery practices.
- Assess bias, explainability, privacy, security, data quality and model risk throughout the lifecycle.
- Communicate recommendations and uncertainty clearly to technical and non-technical audiences.
- Measure performance after release and iterate based on evidence, user feedback and changing conditions.
What success looks like
- Your solutions are technically sound, adopted and connected to a measurable outcome.
- You can own a scoped problem while collaborating effectively across product, engineering, platform and risk teams.
- Your code, documentation and evaluation are strong enough for others to review, operate and extend.
- You make pragmatic choices and know when a simpler model is the better model.
