The Opportunity
We currently have an opportunity for a Senior BI Developer to be based in Philippines, to join our Group Technology Team.
Reporting to the Head of IT Strategy, Architecture & Governance, the Senior BI Developer is responsible for providing expert-level analysis, technical development, and support for PowerBI and other reporting solutions. This role involves gathering business reporting requirements, defining technical data and reporting solutions, designing and building semantic layers, creating and maintaining curated data views in Snowflake, and developing PowerBI reports and dashboards, as well as supporting the business through the administration and optimization of reporting solutions.
This role will involve primarily utilizing Snowflake as the underlying data source for reporting, including building and optimizing SQL views and a well-structured semantic layer that deliver a governed, single source of truth for PowerBI.
Key Responsibilities
- Business Requirements Gathering:
• Collaborate with business stakeholders to gather and document reporting requirements.
• Translate business requirements into technical specifications for data and reporting solutions. - Data Preparation & Reporting View Development (Snowflake):
• Design, build, and maintain curated SQL views and other consumption-layer objects in Snowflake to serve as the certified, reporting-ready data source for PowerBI.
• Develop and optimize SQL transformations that shape raw and modelled data into analytics-ready structures, such as star-schema views, aggregate views, and reusable business logic.
• Establish and enforce view naming standards, layering conventions, and version control so the reporting estate remains consistent, maintainable, and well documented.
• Tune Snowflake views and queries for performance and cost efficiency, applying techniques such as clustering, materialized views, and query optimization.
• Partner with data engineering to align reporting views with upstream data models and to safeguard data quality, integrity, and lineage. - Semantic Layer Design & Data Modelling:
• Design, build, and maintain the semantic layer that sits between Snowflake and PowerBI, providing a consistent, business-friendly representation of enterprise data.
• Develop robust PowerBI semantic models (datasets), including star-schema data models, relationships, hierarchies, and well-defined dimensions and facts.
• Author reusable DAX measures, calculation groups, and KPIs that encapsulate business logic and establish a single source of truth for enterprise metrics.
• Publish certified and shared semantic models to promote reuse, governance, and trusted self-service analytics across the enterprise.
• Implement row-level security (RLS) and object-level security within the semantic layer to enforce appropriate and compliant data access.
• Select and optimize storage modes (Import, DirectQuery, and Composite models) against Snowflake to balance performance, data freshness, and cost.
• Document the semantic layer — including data dictionaries, measure definitions, and lineage — to support transparency, governance, and onboarding. - PowerBI Report Development:
• Design, develop, and maintain PowerBI reports and dashboards.
• Ensure reports are highly reliable, accurate, and trusted by end-users.
• Conduct user acceptance testing (UAT) with end-users and iterate based on feedback.
• Build reports and dashboards on top of certified semantic models and Snowflake-backed views to ensure consistency, reduce duplication, and reinforce a single source of truth.
• Apply data visualization and PowerBI report design best practices to deliver clear, intuitive, and accessible reports that support confident decision-making.
• Optimize report performance through efficient DAX, query reduction, and appropriate use of aggregations and the semantic layer. - Technical Support and Optimization:
• Provide technical support for PowerBI and other reporting solutions.
• Optimize reporting solutions for performance and scalability.
• Administer and manage PowerBI environments, including user access and security. - Architecting Environment:
• Design and implement PowerBI workspaces to support various business units and projects.
• Ensure workspaces are structured to facilitate efficient data management and collaboration.
• Develop best practices for workspace organization and maintenance. - Enterprise PowerBI Environment Management:
• Oversee the entire PowerBI environment for the enterprise, ensuring it meets business needs and compliance requirements.
• Manage PowerBI service settings, including capacity management, data refresh schedules, and gateway configurations.
• Monitor and troubleshoot PowerBI service performance and availability issues. - Training and Documentation:
• Develop and maintain documentation for reporting solutions and processes.
• Provide training and support to end-users for self-service PowerBI report creation.
• Troubleshoot and resolve issues related to PowerBI reports and dashboards. - Collaboration and Communication:
• Work closely with IT, data, and business teams to ensure alignment of reporting solutions with business goals.
• Communicate effectively with stakeholders to manage expectations and deliver high-quality reporting solutions.
