Indirect Tax Analyst

Position Summary
The Indirect Tax Analyst is responsible for supporting the Company’s indirect tax function, with a primary focus on sales and use tax compliance. This role executes day-to-day compliance tasks, works alongside external service providers, and assists with sales tax audits, business licensing, and system upkeep. The ideal candidate has a solid foundation in sales and use tax, is detail oriented and reliable, and is excited to grow within a small, collaborative finance team in a fast-paced specialty retail environment.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Support and coordinate with the external sales tax compliance service provider responsible for the monthly compliance process, including data preparation, return filing, and tax payment monitoring.
- Perform day-to-day operational tasks within the Company’s sales tax engine (Vertex O Series), including transaction validation, reporting, and routine upkeep; escalate configuration and integration issues as appropriate.
- Maintain the exemption certificate process within Vertex O Series, including certificate collection, validation, and ongoing upkeep of customer exemption certificates in accordance with state requirements.
- Support sales tax audits by coordinating data gathering requests, liaising with state and local taxing authorities, and working with outside service providers and internal stakeholders throughout the audit process.
- Assist with sales and use tax research by gathering relevant data and documentation to support inquiries and audit defense.
- Support new store growth by managing sales tax licensing and registration filings and coordinating Vertex O Series set up for new locations.
- Assist with tracking nexus-creating activities as the company’s footprint expands.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for ensuring vendors appropriately charge sales tax and that the Company correctly accrues use tax on applicable purchases.
- Serve as the first point of contact for business licensing compliance, managing data requests, coordinating annual renewals, and processing new license applications across all Company locations in partnership with external service provider.
- Assist with personal property tax compliance, including gathering data for annual filings and tracking assessment notices in coordination with outside service provider.
Qualifications and Skills Required:
- 2-4 years of experience in Sales and Use Tax compliance.
- Preferred licensed CPA, CMI, or a Master’s degree in Taxation.
- Experience with Vertex O Series strongly desired.
- Strong Microsoft Excel and Windows-based accounting system knowledge.
- High level of attention to detail.
- Proactive personality, with a desire to grow with the company.
- Thrives in a fast-paced, growing environment and is comfortable working with guidance while developing greater independence.
- Flexibility to work extended hours, when necessary.
- Strong desire to be integrated into the broader finance team.
- Strong tax research, technical, and accounting skills.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with experience working effectively with across departments.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements:
- Monday – Friday onsite, based out of our Roswell, GA Store Support Center. Flexibility to work extended and varied hours as needed.
- Must be able to stand and/or sit for extended periods of time as the job is completed primarily at a desk each day. Variable desk heights are offered so alternatively sitting and/or standing at the desk is optional.
