The Indirect Tax Accountant is responsible for the accurate and timely preparation, filing, and reconciliation of indirect tax obligations for the Company. This position supports compliance with federal, state, and local tax regulations related to sales and use tax, property tax, motor fuel tax, and excise tax while assisting with tax research and maintaining strong internal controls. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, organized, and able to manage multiple deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Prepare and file multi-state sales and use tax returns accurately and on time.
  • Collect, review, analyze, and summarize property tax information for submission to outside tax consultants responsible for preparing property tax renditions.
  • Prepare and file state motor fuel tax returns and related reports.
  • Reconcile general ledger accounts related to indirect taxes and prepare supporting documentation.
  • Research and resolve tax notices, assessments, and correspondence from taxing authorities.
  • Maintain tax calendars to ensure timely compliance with filing and payment deadlines.
  • Analyze transactions to ensure proper indirect tax treatment and compliance with applicable tax laws.
  • Assist with tax audits by gathering documentation and responding to auditor requests.
  • Work closely with Accounting, Operations, Revenue, Purchasing, and Accounts Payable to ensure accurate tax reporting.
  • Maintain organized tax records and supporting documentation.
  • Stay current on changes in federal, state, and local indirect tax laws and regulations.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for external tax advisors and taxing authorities regarding indirect tax matters.
  • Issue and maintain exemption and resale certificates for vendors across multiple jurisdictions.
  • Research and resolve indirect tax questions related to sales and purchasing transactions, including the application of exemptions and taxability determinations.
  • Assist with identifying tax savings opportunities and implementing process improvements to strengthen indirect tax compliance.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field.
  • At least Three (3) years of accounting and/or indirect tax experience.
  • Experience preparing multi-state sales and use tax returns.
  • Experience preparing property tax renditions.
  • Experience preparing state motor fuel tax filings.
  • Strong accounting knowledge, including general ledger account reconciliations.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including formulas, pivot tables, lookups, and data analysis.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple projects and consistently meet deadlines.
  • High level of accuracy, attention to detail, and confidentiality.

Preferred

  • Experience in the oil and gas exploration and production industry.
  • Experience researching multi-state indirect tax and federal excise tax issues.
  • Experience with ERP/accounting systems such as SAP or similar platforms.
  • Familiarity with tax compliance software (e.g., Vertex, OneSource, or similar).
  • Experience managing multi-state indirect tax audits, including responding to information requests, coordinating with external consultants, negotiating audit findings, and resolving assessments.
  • Working knowledge of federal excise tax requirements and the ability to prepare excise tax returns.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Thorough understanding of indirect tax compliance and accounting principles.
  • Ability to interpret tax laws and apply them to business transactions.
  • Strong reconciliation and analytical skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and other Microsoft Office applications.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with cross-functional teams.
  • Strong knowledge of multi-state exemption certificate requirements and indirect tax documentation standards.
  • Ability to interpret tax statutes and regulations and communicate tax implications effectively to accounting and operational personnel.
  • Excellent project management and organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple filing deadlines and priorities simultaneously.
