Lead Data Engineer
Job Description
About The Role
We are looking for a senior, client-facing Twilio Segment CDP Solution Architect to lead the architecture and technical delivery of a high-scale customer data platform for a major digital consumer business. The programme connects real-time web, mobile and server-side behaviour with Snowflake-based customer intelligence, deterministic identity resolution, audience activation and low-latency personalisation.
This is not platform administration or advisory-only position. You will own critical architecture decisions, translate business and marketing use cases into scalable data and identity patterns, guide multi-disciplinary engineering teams through implementation, and represent the solution with senior Product, Marketing, Data Engineering, Enterprise Architecture, Privacy and Security stakeholders.
The environment includes Twilio Segment Connections, Protocols, Unify, Engage, Functions, Profiles Sync, Reverse ETL and Profile API; Snowflake; Kafka or equivalent event streaming; web and mobile SDKs; server-side APIs; GraphQL/API gateway patterns; Braze; Cordial; dbt and enterprise observability tooling.
What You Will Do
Define the target-state Segment architecture, integration patterns, environment strategy, security boundaries, non-functional requirements and implementation guardrails.
Design dual-path event ingestion across Segment SDKs, server-side sources, Kafka and Snowflake, including schema alignment, deduplication, event ordering, anonymous-identifier continuity and high-volume operating patterns.
Own the identity-resolution strategy for anonymous-to-known stitching, identifier priority, merge limits, retention, retroactive merging, false-merge and false-split prevention, profile-bloat controls and identity-quality measurement.
Design the Segment-Snowflake feedback loop for unified identities, customer attributes, model scores, analytical segments, activation feedback and canonical profile keys.
Architect low-latency real-time personalisation using Segment Profile API through server-side services, GraphQL or API gateways, including payload minimisation, caching, timeouts, fallbacks, security, observability and performance testing.
Define audience-computation, trait-freshness, journey-triggering, suppression, frequency-control and downstream delivery patterns for Braze, Cordial and other activation platforms.
Establish enterprise event taxonomy, Tracking Plans, Protocols, data contracts, naming standards and controlled schema-change processes across web, mobile and server-side engineering teams.
Implement cost-control strategies using source-level filtering, Segment Functions, Destination Filters, event-volume baselines, MTU monitoring and high-value versus low-value event classification.
Define data-quality reconciliation, SLAs/SLOs, monitoring, alerting, incident response, release controls and production-readiness criteria across the end-to-end customer data flow.
Lead discovery sessions, architecture workshops, technical design reviews, risk decisions and executive-ready communications with client and delivery stakeholders.
Provide technical direction and quality oversight to Segment implementation engineers, Snowflake/data engineers, streaming engineers, QA analysts and activation teams.
Convert architecture decisions into clear diagrams, decision records, test strategies, runbooks, support models and a sustainable Day-2 operating model.
Qualifications
8-12 years of experience in MarTech architecture, data engineering, customer data platforms, digital analytics engineering or a related enterprise technology role.
3-5+ years of direct, hands-on Twilio Segment delivery experience, with demonstrable ownership of production architecture or implementation decisions.
At least two enterprise CDP implementations, including one involving complex identity resolution, high-volume behavioural data or a warehouse-connected customer profile.
Strong production experience with Segment Connections, Protocols and Unify, with working depth across Engage, Functions, Profiles Sync, Reverse ETL and Profile API.
Strong Snowflake architecture and SQL capability, including data modelling, secure connectivity, performance considerations, profile/audience reconciliation and bidirectional integration patterns.
Hands-on experience with Kafka, Kinesis, Pub/Sub or an equivalent event-streaming technology, including trade-offs between real-time CDP ingestion and warehouse-first analytical collection.
Deep understanding of customer identity concepts including anonymous identifiers, deterministic matching, identifier hierarchies, merge constraints, survivorship, shared-device scenarios, co-buyers, profile bloat and identity-quality metrics.
Experience designing web, mobile and server-side event collection using Analytics.js, mobile SDKs, Segment Spec calls and API-based sources.
Proficiency in JavaScript/TypeScript and at least one backend language such as Python, Java or Go for Segment Functions, custom integrations and diagnostic tooling.
Experience designing secure APIs, webhooks, private connectivity, secrets management, privacy controls and PII-safe customer data movement.
Strong client-facing consulting capability, including discovery, workshop facilitation, architecture storytelling, trade-off communication, risk management and stakeholder alignment.
Ability to lead through influence, review implementation work, mentor engineers and maintain quality across distributed onshore and offshore teams.
Evidence of personally delivered Segment implementations. Candidates should be able to describe modules used, data scale, identity approach, architecture constraints, production issues solved and their individual contribution.
Additional Information
Direct experience in integrating Segment with Braze and/or Cordial.
Experience with dbt, Snowpipe, Snowflake Streams and Tasks, Terraform, Git-based delivery or CI/CD for data and MarTech infrastructure.
GraphQL, API gateway, edge-caching or other low-latency personalisation architecture experience.
Experience in a high-traffic marketplace, real estate, media, travel, retail, financial-services, subscription or consumer technology business.
Knowledge of GDPR, CCPA/CPRA, consent propagation, deletion and suppression workflows, PII classification and data-retention controls.
Twilio Segment Implementation certification or current Segment University training, supported by credible production delivery evidence.
Previous experience in a consulting or systems-integration organisation delivering complex client programmes.
