SUMMARY
The Management Analyst Intern position works within the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Research & Strategic Planning Division to gain knowledge of criminal justice research methods, survey development, program evaluation, and project management. The primary responsibility is to assist division personnel in researching and evaluating current and future policing issues to enhance the effectiveness of CMPD’s activities and to stay abreast of current policing strategies.Major Duties and Responsibilities:
- Support the development and preparation of survey instruments, evaluation tools, and related materials.
- Assist with survey administration, data collection, and data organization activities.
- Perform basic statistical analyses and assist with interpretation of findings.
- Assist in the preparation and development of survey and program evaluation reports.
- Conduct research and literature reviews on topics relevant to departmental initiatives and projects.
- Compile, summarize, and organize research findings for internal use and decision-making purposes.
- Participate actively in internal meetings, project discussions, and presentations related to survey and evaluation initiative.
- Provide general project support for survey, research, and program evaluation activities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
- Current undergraduate or graduate level student pursuing a degree in criminal justice/public administration or related discipline with a minimum GPA of 2.5.
- OR have a combination of equivalent work experience and training.
- Successful completion of an undergraduate level statistics course.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Completion of at least two (2) years of undergraduate coursework.
- Completion of an undergraduate or graduate level research methods course.
- Experience with data visualization tools (Tableau, Power BI, etc.).
- Experience with data analysis tools/software (Excell, SPSS, R, etc.).
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Ability to take initiative, follow through on assignments, and respond appropriately to requests and changing priorities.
- Ability to work in a team environment.
- Ability to receive and apply feedback effectively and engage in constructive communication with others.
- High level of proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite products (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and familiarity with Adobe products.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Strong organizational, technological, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to utilize research databases and platforms, conduct thorough literature searches, and construct quality literature reviews and compile best practices.
- Experience in data analysis, research methods, theory, and statistics.

Physical Requirements:
- Essential and marginal functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for sitting, standing, climbing, or walking for extended periods of time.
- Light to moderate lifting and carrying; some crouching, stooping, squatting, crawling, reaching, pushing, and pulling when performing tasks.
- Ability to see, hear, and communicate information effectively.
Sensory Requirements:
- Concentrated and attentive use of one or more senses (visual, audio, and other sensory modalities) for proofreading, data entry, tabulating data.
- Ability to operate in an environment with frequent interruptions from people and or noises, which in return could result in some level of stress, fatigue, or strain.
- Comprehend written information in work-related documents.
- Ability to hear, understand, and distinguish speech.
Working Conditions:
Work is performed in an indoor office environment with moderate exposure to atmospheric conditions, moderate exposure to environmental conditions, and frequent exposure to computer screens, files and phones.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
The City’s Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final internal or external candidate(s) applying for any position with the City of Charlotte. The type of information that will be collected as part of a background check includes, but is not limited to: reference checks, social security verification, education verification, criminal conviction record check, and, if applicable, a credit history check, sex offender registry and motor vehicle records check.
Background checks must be in compliance with all federal and state statutes, such as the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA). The checks must be consistent with the guidelines set forth by these laws requiring organizations to obtain a candidate’s written authorization before obtaining a criminal background report, motor vehicle records check or credit report; and to properly store and dispose of information derived from such reports.
Final candidates must pass a pre-employment drug-screening test and physical examination. During the selection process, candidates may be asked to take a skills test, and/or participate in other assessments.
