Position Summary:
This position provides leadership, direction, and technical management for Geographic Information System (GIS) activities for Duke Energy to ensure the distribution and transmission business units achieve data accuracy expectations and requirements that are reliable, traceable, verifiable, and complete.
This position leads/directs a team of GIS Technologists who perform various technical activities to ensure facility and asset information is entered and maintained in the GIS as “the system of record” for asset location and physical attribute data. The position is responsible for the quality assurance/quality control of asset data and ensures that land base and electric asset data meet quality standards and is accessible to the business. Additionally, this team will support the creation and updates to complex CAD drawings of downtown underground electrical configurations and layouts.
The asset data maintained in the GIS serves as the foundation for key business activities including Distribution/Transmission Integrity Management; Reliability Engineering; Major Projects; Equipment Audits and Inspections; Underground Locates (811); System Planning; Emergency Planning and Response (System Outages); Aerial Patrols; Annual Reporting for State and Federal (FERC) agencies; Field Customer Service; Sales, etc. This position plays a fundamental role in executing the vision and strategy related to new technologies and methods to improve data collection, data quality, and data analysis in support of the electric distribution and transmission teams.
This position requires a high degree of initiative and judgment in order to recognize and respond to the challenges inherent to asset and facility data requirements. The incumbent works closely with multiple stakeholders as well as IT leaders. The position requires independent thinking, GIS expertise, superior decision making, strong employee and team motivation along with a drive to innovate in the space of data, processes and GIS.
Responsibilities:
Provide Vision and Roadmap for GIS Data Integrity Team:
Creates the Vision, Strategy, and Roadmap for GIS Data Quality activities for the Duke Energy.
Act as GIS visionary SME and Business Sponsor on IT and Data Quality projects to ensure projects align with long term strategy.
Work with Grid Data and Asset Data Quality leadership to set and implement team strategy
Communicates vision and roadmap to team
Manages, provides direction, and oversight for the GIS Data Integrity team to ensure reliable and quality service:
Ensures assigned work is completed according to schedule and in compliance with standards.
Ensures standard work processes are followed by team.
Complete project reviews to observe progress, performance, quality, and results.
Monitors team results to identify opportunities for improvement. Initiates actions to ensure objectives are achieved and improvement opportunities are addressed.
Provides guidance in the identification and resolution of GIS technical and process problems to ensure safe and efficient system operation.
Provides oversight to the team for design and application of company policies and business requirements (including equipment applications, standards, IT policies, etc.)
Coordinates with other corporate GIS and mapping groups.

Support Distribution and Transmission Operations through GIS needs of the business during day-to-day activities and providing after hours and emergency support for GIS as required.
Required/Basic Qualifications
Bachelors degree in Geography, Information Technology, Computer Science, Geology or Other Related Degree
In addition to required degree, five (5) or more years related work experience
In lieu of Bachelors degree(s) AND five (5) or more years related work experience listed above, High School/GED AND nine (9) or more years related work experience

Master’s Degree
Working Conditions
Position requires periods of sitting at desk and working with computers.
It may also require occasional walking over uneven terrain.
Requires occasional overnight travel.
The position provides company storm support.
Specific Requirements
Awareness or understanding of ESRI products and services (ex. ESRI Portal and ArcGIS)
Awareness and/or understanding of the electric and gas utility industry and engineering business needs and priorities
