Research Analyst Internship (August
Job Description
We are looking for a research intern to support a medium- to long-term forecasting project on China’s carbon market.
The intern will help track policy developments, collect sector data, and build a forecasting framework for carbon emissions and allowance demand through 2035, focusing on key sectors covered by China’s national carbon market.
Key Responsibilities
- Track China carbon market policies, regulatory updates and sector expansion progress
- Collect and organize data on output, capacity, energy consumption, fuel mix and sector demand
- Support carbon emissions and allowance demand forecasting for key sectors through 2035
- Analyze sector activity levels, energy intensity, emission factors and decarbonisation pathways
- Build structured databases, charts and model documentation
- Conduct scenario and sensitivity analysis using Excel, Python or R
Qualifications
- Senior undergraduate or postgraduate student in energy economics, environmental economics, finance, statistics, economics, power, materials, environmental studies or related fields
- Strong interest in China’s carbon market, energy transition and macro / industry research
- Good research, data collection and analytical skills
- Proficient in Excel; Python, R or SQL experience preferred
- Familiarity with energy demand forecasting, carbon accounting, scenario analysis or supply-demand modelling is a plus
- Knowledge of power, steel, cement, aluminium, petrochemicals or chemicals sectors preferred
- Able to read Chinese and English materials
- Detail-oriented, diligent and able to work independently
- Able to commit to at least 3 days per week

Additional Preferred Qualifications
- Familiarity with China’s national carbon market policies;
- Experience in energy demand forecasting, industry supply-demand modelling, or decarbonization pathway research;
- Understanding of high-emission sectors such as power, steel, cement, electrolytic aluminum, petrochemicals, and chemicals;
- Internship experience in energy consulting, securities research, industry research, or ESG research;
- Ability to conduct automated data processing, regression analysis, scenario forecasting, or visualization.
