Retail Energy Market Services Analyst
Job Description
Customized Energy Solutions (CES) is seeking a Retail Energy Market Services Analyst to join its Retail Market Services team. This team delivers strategic wholesale energy market services to retail energy market participants, including forecasting, pricing, settlements, risk management, financial planning and analysis, and natural gas services.
The Analyst will join a small, experienced, and fast-paced team of energy professionals focused on delivering best-in-class service to clients. This role sits at the center of complex and evolving energy market operations and offers exposure to some of the industry’s most dynamic and challenging issues.
This position will support two primary areas:
- The delivery of operational and analytical services to CES clients; and
- The development of business inputs for software development efforts that drive process automation and operational efficiency.
The successful candidate will use strong analytical, technical, communication, and collaboration skills to support client deliverables, validate and analyze data, perform recurring and ad hoc energy market analyses, and contribute to process improvement initiatives. The position will involve internal, cross-functional, and client-facing work.
Responsibilities include:
- Perform daily, weekly, and monthly operational tasks with market-driven deadlines and competing priorities.
- Develop, maintain, and operate models and analytical tools supporting Retail Market Services functions, including forecasting, pricing, settlements, risk management, financial planning and analysis, and natural gas services.
- Aggregate, validate, analyze, and submit market and client data in support of CES’s responsibilities to clients, including responsibilities as designated wholesale market scheduling coordinator.
- Execute market settlement reporting to help clients understand energy market activity, market participant costs, and related business impacts.
- Prepare bottom-up retail load forecasts, retail cost-to-serve analyses, and pricing projections to support client risk management, planning, product offerings, and rate-setting decisions.
- Support natural gas planning and trading functions on interstate pipelines on behalf of clients.
- Develop and maintain reporting metrics related to service delivery, operational performance, and underlying business drivers.
- Support client deliverables, client communications, and the development of strong client relationships through timely, accurate, and responsive work product.
- Coordinate with retail EDI, billing, client lead, data warehouse, and other internal teams to support operational execution and identify cross-process efficiencies.
- Support internal process automation efforts through discovery, documentation, and communication of business requirements and functional specifications within the software development lifecycle.
- Serve as a business stakeholder in software development efforts, including defining acceptance criteria, preparing test data sets and scenarios, supporting user acceptance testing, and providing business input on assigned items.
- Provide additional analytical, operational, and coordination support across Retail Market Services functions, including ad hoc analyses and special projects.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Economics, Finance, Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, Business, Energy Management, Computer Science, or another quantitative or analytical field.
- Two+ years of experience in retail or wholesale energy markets, utilities, financial analysis, operations, or a related analytical role preferred. Relevant internships or co-op experience will also be considered.
- Knowledge of U.S. wholesale electricity markets (PJM, ERCOT, MISO, NYISO, ISO-NE, CAISO, etc.), retail energy markets, natural gas markets, or utility operations is preferred.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to interpret large data sets, identify trends, and draw meaningful business conclusions.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including formulas, pivot tables, data analysis, and modeling.
- Experience working with SQL, Python, Power BI, Tableau, or other data analysis and reporting tools is preferred.
- Understanding of retail energy concepts such as forecasting, pricing, settlements, load analysis, cost-to-serve, risk management, or financial planning is a plus.
- Familiarity with software development processes, business requirements documentation, user acceptance testing (UAT), or Agile methodologies is preferred.
- Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and consistently meet time-sensitive deadlines.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to explain technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently while collaborating effectively across cross-functional teams.
- Strong attention to detail, accuracy, and commitment to delivering high-quality work.
- Client service mindset with the ability to build productive working relationships and respond effectively to client needs.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with EDI, billing systems, wholesale market settlements, scheduling, or retail operations.
- Knowledge of natural gas transportation, pipeline scheduling, or gas supply operations.
- Experience with business process improvement, automation initiatives, or workflow optimization.
