The Role

As we continue to grow as QuidelOrtho we are seeking a SCADA Database and Software Engineer to join our Operational Technology team in Rochester, NY. This role is responsible for supporting MSSQL databases, manufacturing SCADA applications, select thin client/server hardware, and SCADA‑facing ladder logic within a complex, highly automated production environment. The engineer will also develop reporting and visualization tools to support data‑driven decision‑making. The ideal candidate will be capable of designing, optimizing, and troubleshooting databases, reports, and SCADA applications that enable reliable, efficient operation of critical manufacturing equipment and processes. This individual will contribute to maximizing equipment uptime through efficient data flow design, continuous improvement of existing systems, and timely support of SCADA‑related issues in a 24/7 manufacturing facility. Work is performed in an FDA‑regulated environment, requiring thorough documentation of processes and changes. The role may also support the OT Team with systems and network‑related troubleshooting and projects.

This position is onsite in Rochester, NY.

The Responsibilities

  • SQL Database Management — Maintain, optimize, and update existing SQL databases and SCADA applications (Ignition and FactoryTalk View Suite).

  • Performance Monitoring — Establish and maintain routines to monitor database and SCADA system performance.

  • Cross‑Functional Support — Collaborate with Line Engineering to diagnose and resolve database and SCADA‑related issues.

  • Root Cause Analysis — Conduct failure analyses on equipment issues and develop strategies to prevent recurrence.

  • Continuous Improvement — Stay current on database design, optimization techniques, and SCADA best practices.

  • Reporting & Visualization — Develop and maintain reports using SSRS, Power BI, and related tools.

  • Application Code Maintenance — Maintain and update existing application code.

  • Additional Duties — Perform other work‑related responsibilities as assigned.

The Individual

Required:

  • Bachelor’s Degree.

  • 5+ Years of IT experience.

  • Experience in a regulated industry is a plus.

  • Programming Skills in Visual Basic/Python or a similar object‑oriented language.

Preferred:

  • Degree in a technical discipline.

  • Experience as a database and/or SCADA engineer.

  • Experience in a regulated industry.

  • Strong knowledge of SCADA systems.(View Studio Suite and Ignition)

  • Familiarity with Allen‑Bradley PLCs.

Key Working Relationship

Internal : SAMs, PKG, Film and Fluids Operations, Maintenance and Engineering, Capital Engineering, Information Technology Team, Facilities

External : Vendors

The Work Environment/ Physical Demands

  • Work in and around industrial automated equipment

  • PPE required when in Machine Rooms (Hearing, Eye and Foot ware all provided)

The Physical Demands

  • Need to be able to occasionally lift servers and other heavy equipment.

Salary Transparency

The salary range for this position takes into account a wide range of factors including education, experience, knowledge, skills, geography, and abilities of the candidate, in addition to internal equity and alignment with market data. At QuidelOrtho, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top range for their role and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. The salary range for this position is $89,000 to $115,000 and is bonus eligible. QuidelOrtho offers a comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental, vision, life, and disability insurance, along with a 401(k) plan, employee assistance program, Employee Stock Purchase Plan, paid time off (including sick time), and paid Holidays. All benefits are non-contractual, and QuidelOrtho may amend, terminate, or enhance the benefits provided, as it deems appropriate.
