About the role
The Semantic Data Expert sits within AGL's Data & AI Value & Transformation team, playing a pivotal role in connecting business priorities with enterprise data capabilities. The role owns the meaning layer of AGL’s enterprise data: designing and stewarding the semantic models, business glossary, taxonomies, ontologies and knowledge graphs that turn raw data into trusted, governed and reusable information the whole enterprise can understand and act on.
As AGL scales analytics and generative and agentic AI, this role is central to making data ‘AI-ready’ – ensuring dashboards, self-service analytics, large language models and AI agents are grounded in consistent, well-defined business concepts rather than ambiguous or duplicated definitions. Working across the Enterprise Data Platform (EDP) and partnering closely with data engineering, data governance and business unit data leaders, the role directly supports AGL’s Data & AI ambition to be Safe, Impactful and Reliable.
What you'll be doing
Design, build and steward AGL’s enterprise semantic layer – semantic and metric models, business glossary, taxonomies and ontologies – so that key business terms and metrics carry a single, agreed definition.
Translate business concepts and questions into reusable semantic data models over the Enterprise Data Platform, working with data engineers to align physical data structures to agreed business meaning.
Develop and maintain knowledge graphs and semantic relationships that connect data across domains (customer, energy markets, assets and retail) to improve data discoverability and reuse.
Curate the semantic definitions, context and metadata that make enterprise data ‘AI-ready’, grounding generative AI, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) and AI agents in trusted business meaning.
Partner with Data Governance to embed semantic standards, data definitions and metadata management into the enterprise data catalogue and governance framework.
Enable trusted self-service analytics by providing consistent, well-documented semantic models that business users and analysts can consume with confidence.
Act as the subject-matter expert on semantic modelling, advising delivery squads and business unit teams on best-practice data definitions, modelling patterns and tooling.
Track emerging standards in semantic technology, ontologies and AI grounding, and champion continuous improvement of AGL’s semantic tooling and practices.
What you’ll bring
Demonstrable experience in semantic data modelling, data modelling or information architecture within a large, complex organisation.
Hands-on expertise with semantic or metrics layers (e.g. dbt Semantic Layer, Power BI / Analysis Services semantic models, Cube or AtScale).
Practical knowledge of ontologies, taxonomies and knowledge graphs, including standards such as RDF, OWL and SKOS and query languages such as SPARQL.
Strong SQL and data modelling skills, with experience working over cloud data platforms (e.g. Snowflake, Databricks or Azure) and modern data pipelines.
Understanding of how semantic and metadata layers support analytics, self-service BI and – increasingly – generative and agentic AI (RAG, LLM grounding and semantic or vector search).
Experience with data cataloguing, business glossaries and metadata management tools, and familiarity with data governance practices.
Ability to translate ambiguous business questions into clear, well-structured data definitions, working closely with both business and technical stakeholders.
We’d love to see your applications by Thursday 13th August 2026.
