Overview:

  • Full-time, Continuing position

  • Salary $121,213 - $ 136,507 + 17% Superannuation and Flexible Working Arrangements

  • Based at the Melbourne CBD campus, and hybrid ways of working

About You

As a Senior Data Scientist in RMIT’s Data & Analytics team, you’ll lead the delivery of complex data science solutions that address high‑impact problems across the university. You’ll work end‑to‑end — shaping ambiguous problem statements, designing analytical approaches, and building advanced models and data products using statistical and machine learning techniques. Operating as a technical leader within cross‑functional teams, you’ll partner closely with stakeholders to ensure solutions are fit‑for‑purpose, trusted, and embedded into decision‑making, rather than one‑off analyses.

This role requires deep hands‑on expertise in advanced analytics, machine learning and production‑level data science, alongside strong capability in SQL, Python or R, and modern cloud data platforms. Unlike a Data Scientist role, this position carries greater accountability for solution design, technical standards, and quality, as well as responsibility for improving existing models, pipelines and methodologies across the team. You’ll be expected to coach and uplift other data scientists, contribute to enterprise‑wide best practices, and apply strong judgement when balancing technical rigour with real‑world constraints. We’re looking for a senior practitioner who is comfortable operating with autonomy, influencing through expertise, and delivering scalable, high‑value data science solutions.

To be successful in this position, you’ll have:

  • Agility in delivering work across the breadth of data & analytics services: data pipeline development, data cleansing and preparation, data analysis, report/dashboard development, ML feature selection, ML/AI model development

  • Knowledge of a variety of machine learning and artificial intelligence techniques (regression, statistical tests, text mining, decision tree learning etc) and proven experience of applying and evaluating machine learning techniques to solve business problems

  • Strong programming skills using tools such as SQL, Python/R, AWS Sagemaker

  • Demonstrated ability to coach and mentor junior staff members in the development of analytical skills and techniques

  • Working knowledge of Snowflake for querying and using curated data

  • Awareness of Snowflake Intelligence / Cortex concepts (e.g. agents, semantic views, semantic search)

  • Foundational knowledge of dbt for data transformation and analytics engineering

  • Experience with Git and version-controlled workflows

Please Note: Appointment to this position is subject to passing a Working with Children and National Police Check.
