Job Description

Ares Management is seeking a passionate and hard-working Analyst to support Ares' Japan ESG program, with a primary focus on the Japan Real Estate business. Based out of our Tokyo office, the Analyst will partner with internal stakeholders - including the ESG team and the Japan Real Estate Investment and Operations teams - to add value by supporting Ares' Real Estate and firmwide ESG strategies.

This role will span ongoing responsibilities and project-based work across Japanese Real Estate and to a lesser extent broader Real Estate and/or Ares Corporate Sustainability (firm-level) initiatives.

Working in conjunction with the Tokyo based Senior Associate, ESG this Analyst will work on projects that include, but is not limited to, ESG strategy implementation, data collection and validation, decarbonization and climate change strategy, renewable energy and sustainable building initiatives, and investor, regulatory and sustainability reporting.

The Analyst will also coordinate Japan priorities with Ares' global Real Estate ESG team and prepare high-quality internal and external deliverables. See Ares' Sustainability Report for more information on the ESG team's Corporate Sustainability and Responsible Investment initiatives.

Primary functions & responsibilities

The Analyst will support the following functions:

  • Support the implementation of the Japan ESG strategy, policies and implementation framework, in alignment with global Real Estate and firmwide ESG programs.

  • Project manage assigned ESG workstreams from planning through execution, including maintaining workplans, timelines, action logs, governance materials and progress tracking.

  • Coordinate ESG integration with fund management, investment, asset management, development, operations, finance, Investor Relations, legal and compliance, technology, corporate communications and other Ares Japan business teams.

  • Support ESG initiatives across the Japan Real Estate platform, including ESG data collection, validation and reporting; greenhouse gas emissions measurement and carbon foot printing; decarbonization and climate-related efforts; renewable energy; and sustainable building initiatives.

  • Assist with ESG due diligence for transactions.

  • Support ESG reporting and disclosure activities for investors, customers, regulators and other stakeholders, helping ensure consistency and alignment with global standards, frameworks and reporting processes.

  • Support day-to-day coordination between the Japan business and global ESG teams, participate in international ESG discussions and projects, and help adapt global programs to the Japan business context.

  • Prepare internal and external presentations, program updates, recommendations and other deliverables.

  • Lead data management initiatives, including aggregating and reporting on utility data, building characteristics both internally and externally.

Qualifications

Education

Bachelor's degree required.

Required experience and skills

  • One to three years of work experience in a professional environment, including experience related to ESG, sustainability, responsible investment, corporate strategy, governance, Real Estate, consulting or another relevant areas.

  • Native-level Japanese language proficiency.

  • Strong business-level English communication skills, both written and verbal.

  • Strong project management capabilities, with the ability to manage multiple workstreams, maintain momentum and follow through on commitments.

  • Strong analytical, written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to synthesize research and data into actionable insights and high-quality internal or investor-facing deliverables.

  • Strong Microsoft Office skills, particularly Excel, PowerPoint and Word.

  • Genuine interest in ESG, sustainability and responsible investment, with an appetite to build deeper knowledge of ESG implementation in Real Estate.

Preferred experience

  • Knowledge of Real Estate investment, Real Estate funds or asset management.

  • Experience within a sustainable investments/ESG team at a Real Estate investment manager, private equity firm, REIT, institutional investment environment, financial services firm or consulting organization.

  • Experience identifying, tracking and reporting ESG data and key performance indicators, including supporting systematic processes designed to promote consistency and accuracy.

•• Experience working with ESG frameworks, reporting standards, sustainability disclosures or related regulatory requirements, including GRESB.

Working knowledge of one or more Real Estate ESG topics, such as greenhouse gas emissions, decarbonization, renewable energy, sustainable building programs and/or ESG due diligence.

Preferred skills

  • Strong work ethic, flexibility, excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to prioritize effectively.

  • Team-oriented and highly organized, with the ability to manage multiple projects and build productive relationships across functions, cultures and levels of seniority.

  • Comfort navigating ambiguity, with a strong sense of ownership and attention to detail.
