We work collaboratively with the Victorian State Government to ensure we fulfill regulatory requirements, deliver State projects and safeguard customer data. The Victorian State Government retains sole responsibility for road access, infrastructure and safety.

VicRoads is seeking a hands-on Data Engineer to join our Data Engineering & Platforms team and help shape the future of data.

This is an opportunity for a mid-level engineer with 3 to 5 years of experience building scalable data solutions in modern cloud environments. You'll work on enterprise-grade data platforms, delivering reliable and secure data pipelines that support analytics, reporting, and decision-making across the organisation.

NOTE: Due to security clearance requirements, you must be an Australian Citizen and capable of obtaining a Baseline Security Clearance.

About the Opportunity

As a Data Engineer, you will design, build, optimise, and maintain end-to-end data pipelines that ingest, process, and deliver high-quality data across the organisation.

You will work with modern data technologies and distributed computing frameworks to solve complex data challenges, improve data accessibility, and support the delivery of trusted business insights.

Key responsibilities include:

• Designing and developing scalable, secure, and resilient data pipelines

• Building and maintaining data integrations across multiple platforms and data sources

• Optimising pipeline performance and data processing workloads

• Supporting cloud-based data engineering solutions and platform enhancements

• Applying engineering best practices across automation, testing, deployment, and monitoring

• Working closely with technical and business stakeholders to translate requirements into effective solutions

• Contributing to data governance, security, reliability, and continuous improvement initiatives

About You

You're an engineer first and foremost. You enjoy solving complex data challenges, understand how data moves across large-scale environments, and take pride in building solutions that are performant, maintainable, and scalable.

We're particularly interested in candidates who have built and maintained end-to-end data pipelines in modern data environments and can demonstrate depth of experience across large-scale data processing projects.

What You'll Bring

• Australian Citizens only (required to obtain a Baseline Security Clearance)

• 3 to 5 years' experience building and maintaining data pipelines using modern data stack technologies such as Databricks, Apache Spark, dbt, Kafka, or similar

• Strong proficiency in SQL and Python, with hands-on experience developing data engineering solutions

• Extensive experience working with distributed data processing frameworks, particularly Apache Spark

• Demonstrated understanding of big data concepts and experience processing large and complex datasets

• Strong experience within AWS-based data environments and services

• Proven experience designing, building, and supporting end-to-end data pipelines

• Solid understanding of data modelling, data warehousing, ETL/ELT processes, orchestration, integration, and automation

• Experience applying CI/CD practices within data engineering environments, including exposure to Azure DevOps, infrastructure automation, and deployment pipelines

• Knowledge of data governance, security, and data quality best practices

• Experience optimising Spark and Databricks workloads for scalability and performance

• The ability to explain the technical challenges you've faced, how you approached them, and the outcomes you achieved

• Strong stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to partner effectively with both technical teams and business stakeholders
