About the Role

Data Scientist – Geotechnical & Water

The Data Scientist – Geotechnical & Water is responsible for enabling data-driven decision-making across BHP’s global geotechnical and water portfolio. This role acts as the critical link between domain experts and data science capabilities, partnering with asset teams, projects, and Regional Centre of Excellence (RCoE) teams to identify opportunities, develop advanced analytical solutions, and embed actionable insights into operational processes.

 

The position combines expertise in data science, analytics, machine learning, artificial intelligence, and data engineering with a strong understanding of geotechnical, hydrogeological, and water management systems. The role is focused on transforming complex data into practical solutions that enhance risk management, monitoring, forecasting, planning, and technical performance across the business.

 

By leveraging advanced analytics and digital technologies, the role drives innovation, improves decision quality, supports proactive risk management, and delivers measurable business value through safer, more sustainable, and more productive operations.

 

About You

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics, Engineering, Geoscience, or a related discipline.
  • Extensive experience in data science, machine learning, analytics, and statistical modelling. 
  • Strong proficiency in Python, SQL, and data visualization tools.
  • Proven experience translating business challenges into data-driven solutions and influencing stakeholders.

Preferred

  • Master's degree or PhD in a relevant field.
  • Experience in mining, geotechnical, hydrogeological, water management, or related industries.
  • Knowledge of cloud platforms, data engineering, and enterprise analytics environments.
  • Experience mentoring teams and leading analytics initiatives at scale.
