Job description

Staff Data Engineer

  • Shape a modern data platform and solve complex engineering challenges through hands-on technical leadership.

  • Build trusted, scalable data products using Snowflake, dbt and contemporary software engineering practices.

  • Influence engineering standards, mentor talented colleagues and help teams turn data into meaningful business outcomes.

Do Work That Matters

As a Staff Data Engineer in Bankwest Technology, you’ll play a hands-on role in growing a live, modern data platform built around Snowflake, dbt, GitHub Actions and AWS. You’ll solve complex and sometimes ambiguous problems, build trusted data products, and enable teams across Bankwest to deliver important business use cases.

This is platform modernisation rather than a traditional lift-and-shift migration, with a strong focus on automated delivery, engineering quality and use-case-led adoption.

Bring your ambition and we’ll help you grow, belong and shape what’s next in modern data engineering.

See yourself in our team

You’ll join a Bankwest Tech Shared platforms team that supports and grows the platform while enabling engineering teams to develop and manage data products in a federated environment. The role combines deep technical delivery with mentoring, stakeholder engagement and influence over engineering direction.

In this role, you will:

  • Design, build and operate scalable data pipelines and reusable data products across distributed data platforms.

  • Apply strong data modelling, transformation and integration practices to make data reliable, well governed and fit for purpose.

  • Take end-to-end ownership of data assets in production, including testing, monitoring, operational support and the resolution of critical issues.

  • Work with product, analytics, data science and business stakeholders to understand high-value use cases and translate them into pragmatic technical solutions.

  • Strengthen continuous integration and continuous delivery practices, automation, code quality and secure software engineering across the platform.

  • Provide hands-on technical leadership, mentor engineers and influence standards, patterns, roadmaps and platform direction.

  • Identify and address technical debt, delivery risks and opportunities to improve platform resilience and maintainability.

  • Explore how emerging technology, including AI-assisted engineering, can support modernisation and better ways of working.

We’re interested in hearing from people who:

You’re an experienced data engineering practitioner who can move between detailed technical delivery and conversations with senior stakeholders. You bring strong engineering foundations, take accountability for production outcomes and enjoy helping others build their capability. Learning agility is essential, particularly as tools and AI-assisted engineering practices continue to evolve.

You’ll bring:

  • Experience contributing to large-scale modernisation programs, particularly migrations from on-premises platforms to cloud environments.

  • Hands-on experience designing and developing reliable, scalable data pipelines and data platforms with strong test coverage.

  • Experience delivering data engineering solutions aligned to core data design, preparation, transformation, and load concepts.

  • Strong SQL capability and experience with a modern distributed data platform, such as Snowflake, AWS or a comparable environment.

  • Experience with transformation and engineering tools such as dbt, Python, Git and automated deployment pipelines.

  • Hands-on experience applying software engineering practices, including automated testing, code review, observability and CI/CD within a DevSecOps environment.

  • The ability to isolate complex problems, make pragmatic technical decisions and deliver incrementally in an agile environment.

  • Experience mentoring engineers and influencing technical practices across teams without relying on formal people leadership.

  • Experience with monitoring tools such as Splunk, AppDynamics, Observe, Obstack

  • AWS Cloud (working experience with some of the core services EMR, EC2, S3, Auto-scaling, etc.)
