About the role

We file this job under Data Engineer, by the work the posting describes.

Data engineers build and run the pipelines that copy data out of apps and outside services into a warehouse or lake, and fix them when a source changes or a load fails.

Expect SQL, Python, a cloud platform, a scheduler such as Airflow, and often tools for large data such as Spark or Kafka.

An analytics engineer works one step later, turning the raw data a data engineer lands into clean tables people can query.

Food cost is one of the largest line items in our business, and it moves at the intersection of
purchasing, prep, portioning, and menu mix. We are hiring a data-minded engineer to make that
cost legible: to trace where margin leaks, quantify why, and ship the code that helps our teams
correct it. This is not a reporting-only role — you will own the full loop from data diagnosis to
production deployment.

Key Responsibilities
● Analyze purchase orders, vendor invoices, inventory counts, and point-of-sale data to
identify drivers of food cost variance by store, vendor, item, and week.
● Write and maintain MySQL and SQL Server queries that surface waste, over-prep, portion
drift, price movement, and invoice discrepancy trends.
● Build and support the data feeds, calculations, and fixes behind our internal food-cost
tooling.
● Write and deploy production PHP code in our internal applications to carry food-cost insights
into the workflows store and operations teams use daily.
● Diagnose data quality issues in operational systems (missing items, mismatched units of
measure, duplicate or stalled imports) and partner with engineering to resolve them.
● Communicate findings in clear written analysis: what the data shows, how confident we can
be, and what action it recommends.
● Partner with purchasing, store operations, and leadership to turn analytical findings into
measurable cost reduction.

Requirements

Required Qualifications
● Strong SQL skills across both MySQL, SQL Server and BigQuery: joins, aggregations,
windowed logic where available, and performance-minded query design on transactional
data.
● Know how to use LLMs to get things done, correctly and quickly
● Demonstrated analytical ability: breaking ambiguous business problems into testable
questions and answering them with data.
● Clear, concise written communication; comfortable writing up findings for non-technical
audiences.
● Working knowledge of relational database design and data quality diagnostics (duplicates,
nulls, grain mismatches, unit conversions).
● Comfort working directly with stakeholders to turn analysis into action.
● Production experience writing and deploying PHP in a real application — this role ships code
(Would prefer to have this but not important if the resource doesn’t)

Preferred Qualifications
● Familiarity with food-cost concepts: theoretical vs. actual food cost, yield testing, plate cost,
and inventory valuation.
● Experience with vendor invoice reconciliation or purchase-order auditing.
● Familiarity with reporting and visualization tools (Quicksight).
● Experience integrating or auditing point-of-sale or ERP data (Brink, SQL Server, BigQuery).
