Hi, we're glad you're here! We are hiring to our Aviva Services Excellence Centre! Take a look at our job description - maybe it suits you or one of your friends?

As a Date Engineering Technical Lead you will play a critical leadership role in shaping Aviva’s enterprise data foundations, ensuring data is engineered to be trusted, scalable and accessible across the organisation. The role is to lead a cross-functional engineering team in building a cloud-native Operational Data Store (ODS) platform.

You will take ownership of technical delivery, leading developers to build scalable, event-driven data pipelines and microservices using Kafka (MSK), AWS Glue, ECS, and containerised applications (Spring Boot / Python). This is a hands-on lead role, focused on delivering high-quality engineering outcomes while embedding standards and best practices.

What will you be doing?

You will be responsible for:

Technical Leadership & Team Guidance

  • Lead and mentor a team of data and backend engineers

  • Break down architecture into clear, implementable tasks and designs

  • Review code, ensure quality, and drive engineering best practices

  • Act as the go-to technical escalation point for the team

Delivery & Engineering

Guide the development of:

  • Kafka / MSK-based streaming pipelines

  • AWS Glue ETL jobs (Python/PySpark)

  • Containerised microservices (ECS, Spring Boot / Python)

  • Ensure delivery of scalable, resilient, and high-performing systems

  • Drive CI/CD, testing, and observability (logs/metrics) standards

ODS Platform Implementation

  • Implement end-to-end ODS data flows.

  • Apply event-driven and API-based integration patterns

  • Ensure alignment to canonical data models and schemas

  • Enforce config-driven / metadata-driven approaches (e.g. YAML mapping)

  • Promote reusable patterns for ingestion, transformation, and publishing

  • Contribute to establishing the “golden path” for domain onboarding

What we’re looking for?

  • Strong experience in data engineering and platform delivery (5+ years)

  • Proven expertise in:

    • Kafka / event-driven architectures (MSK preferred)

    • AWS data stack (Glue, S3, ECS, Postgres/Aurora)

    • Java (Spring Boot) and/or Python

  • Experience building scalable data pipelines and microservices

  • Solid understanding of:

    • Operational Data Stores (ODS)

    • Data modelling and transformation patterns

    • Integration patterns (API, event streaming, CDC)

  • Hands-on experience leading developers and driving delivery

  • Demonstrated ability to lead and mentor a team of data and backend engineers

  • Strategic mindset with strong problem-solving, communication and planning skills, alongside experience working in complex, large-scale transformation programmes.
