This is a hands-on engineering leadership role with a deliberate emphasis on solution development — complete, production solutions including the user touchpoints and applications on top of them: we are looking for a leader with deep, current software-development experience — someone who has shipped and operated real solutions end-to-end, not only models — to balance and strengthen a team whose roots are in data science and ML.

Strong Python; cloud (AWS preferred) and modern data/ML platforms (e.g. Databricks/Spark)
Degree in computer science, engineering, or related field, or equivalent experience
Experience adopting AI-assisted development tooling across an engineering team
18 paid volunteer hours each year to make a difference in your community
Experience growing a site or regional engineering hub, including hiring at pace through external partners
Basic Qualifications: - Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field - A minimum of 12 years in software engineering, including substantial hands-on solution development — services, APIs, and user-facing touchpoints/apps (front-end/full-stack) — with several years leading engineering teams and managers

New Data Leadership postings at the employers we follow are up 7% over the last 5 weeks compared with the 5 before.

Counted from the hiring pages we’ve followed for at least five weeks, so employers we add don’t look like growth. Updated weekly.
We file this job under Data Leadership, by the work the posting describes.
Data leaders run data teams or design how a company's data fits together. Managers hire, set priorities and answer for whether the data work pays off; architects choose the systems and the shape of the data.
Expect years of hands-on data work, experience leading people or projects, and the ability to explain tradeoffs to executives.
Unlike a senior engineer or analyst, most of a data leader's week goes to people, planning and decisions rather than building.
The government has no code for data leaders, so these figures are for the closest group, computer and information systems managers, which includes data processing and data operations managers.

Our products are owned end-to-end by engineering leaders — you and your teams carry them from design through production and into maintain-and-optimize. Direction, requirements, and priorities come through our program and product-management partners. This is a deliberate operating model, not a gap: the role succeeds through strong delivery inside that partnership — shaping requirements, pushing back with evidence, and building trust with program teams — not through sole control of product direction. Leaders here own products and stay close to the work; this is not a pass-through people-management position.
