About the role

We file this job under Data Leadership, by the work the posting describes.

Data leaders run data teams or design how a company's data fits together. Managers hire, set priorities and answer for whether the data work pays off; architects choose the systems and the shape of the data.

Expect years of hands-on data work, experience leading people or projects, and the ability to explain tradeoffs to executives.

Unlike a senior engineer or analyst, most of a data leader's week goes to people, planning and decisions rather than building.

The Director owns governance requirements and oversight; business leaders own outcomes and data accountability; IT and Cybersecurity own technical delivery; and Legal, Compliance, and Internal Audit retain interpretation and independent assurance. Initial priorities are classification, retention, stewardship, quality, and Copilot readiness..

Responsibilities

1. Enterprise Data Governance

  • Set the enterprise data governance strategy, policies, operating model, roadmap, ownership, stewardship, and decision rights.
  • Define standards for classification, access, sharing, retention, disposal, metadata, lineage, and data quality.
  • Lead the Data & AI Governance Council, maintain the catalog and glossary, coordinate governance for new solutions, and report metrics, risks, and decisions.

2. AI Governance and Responsible Enablement

  • Establish the AI governance framework, acceptable-use standards, decision rights, and lifecycle controls.
  • Operate a single intake and risk-tiering process for AI ideas, pilots, embedded capabilities, and third-party tools.
  • Coordinate reviews, maintain the AI inventory, define responsible-AI requirements, and help approved use cases move safely from pilot to production.

3. Business Ownership, Adoption, and Value

  • Ensure each initiative has a clear business problem, sponsor, users, value case, KPIs, adoption plan, and risk owner.
  • Drive data and AI literacy, communications, and champion networks with HR and business leaders.
  • Track adoption, value, quality, risk, and scalability; recommend whether initiatives should scale, change, or stop.

4. Data Protection Requirements and Control Oversight

  • Define protection requirements for sensitive company, customer, employee, carrier, and partner information.
  • Partner with IT and Cybersecurity to translate requirements into access, labeling, DLP, encryption, logging, and monitoring controls.
  • Review coverage, coordinate exceptions and escalations, and represent data governance during material data or AI incidents.

5. Privacy, Legal, Compliance, and Assurance Coordination

  • Monitor relevant legal, regulatory, privacy, contractual, and governance developments and communicate material impacts.
  • Translate Legal and Compliance guidance into operating standards and coordinate privacy, data protection, and AI impact assessments.
  • Maintain evidence for audits and customer reviews, while independent assurance remains with Internal Audit and Compliance.

6. Third-Party and Vendor Governance

  • Set data and AI requirements for vendors, platforms, models, consultants, and embedded capabilities.
  • Coordinate cross-functional assessments of data use, access, residency, retention, model training, auditability, incident duties, portability, and exit risk.
  • Track material third-party risks, exceptions, remediation, and periodic reassessments.

Qualifications

Required Background

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field; advanced degree preferred.
  • 8+ years in data or AI governance, data management, analytics, digital transformation, enterprise architecture, or information governance.
  • Proven success building cross-functional governance programs and influencing senior stakeholders without direct authority.
  • Working knowledge of data lifecycle, responsible AI, Microsoft 365, Purview, Copilot, cloud and data platforms, cybersecurity, and privacy controls.
  • Strong judgment, integrity, communication, facilitation, and change leadership; logistics experience is preferred.
