About the role

We file this job under Data Engineer, by the work the posting describes.

Data engineers build and run the pipelines that copy data out of apps and outside services into a warehouse or lake, and fix them when a source changes or a load fails.

Expect SQL, Python, a cloud platform, a scheduler such as Airflow, and often tools for large data such as Spark or Kafka.

An analytics engineer works one step later, turning the raw data a data engineer lands into clean tables people can query.

About Kubos Semiconductors Kubos Semiconductors is developing and commercialising its patented technology in cubic gallium nitride (GaN) which has the potential to significantly increase the energy efficiency and switch speed of LEDs across the visible wavelength spectrum. Kubos’ technology can provide fundamental advantages across multiple markets, namely, next generation displays (including AR/VR), high-efficiency LED lighting and optical communications. Kubos has a small team of its own but is fabless, with all its development carried out at third party facilities including both academic institutions and commercial manufacturing facilities. From its office in Cardiff, Kubos is ideally situated in the South Wales semiconductor cluster with ease of access to the wider UK semiconductor eco-system. On completion of development, Kubos plans to license its technology to existing large OEMs and LED manufacturers, providing low barrier to entry to developers wishing to take advantage of cubic-GaN technology. The Opportunity Kubos runs experimental campaigns that produce large amounts of research data. This is an exciting chance to shape how a deep-tech company manages and analyses that data, so its scientists and engineers can spend less time processing results and more time understanding what the experiments are telling them. Working closely with the team, you will review how data is handled today, recommend the right tools, including AI-powered options, and show what is possible using Kubos’ real experimental data. You will have the freedom to shape your own solutions and see the impact of your work on a growing research team. What You Will Do Data review and discovery Review Kubos’ current data management and analysis processes, mapping the sources of experimental data and how they are handled Work with engineers to understand what results they need to see, and how they want to compare results across experiments and over time Tools and automation Work with staff to define a standard report template for experimental campaigns Build and demonstrate automated data processing and reporting using real data, reducing manual copy-and-paste work Explore how AI and data tools could support design of experiments, helping the team decide what to test next Adoption and responsible use Deliver training to the team on new tools and ways of working, so they can use them with confidence What We Offer Location: Cardiff, hybrid, with a minimum of 3 days a week in the office Hours: 30 hours per week, worked over 4 days Contract length: 6-month graduate placement through Tech Talent Cymru, with the potential to become a permanent role Start date: Mid-to-late January 2027 Salary: £13.70 per hour Pension: Workplace pension with employer contributions The chance to work at the cutting edge of semiconductor technology in a deep-tech company Real ownership of a project that will change how a research team works Hands-on experience applying data and AI tools to real experimental data A place in the growing South Wales semiconductor cluster Part of Tech Talent Cymru This role is offered through Tech Talent Cymru, a graduate placement programme funded by Innovate UK and delivered by Darogan. It connects talented graduates with employers across Wales that need digital and technical skills to grow. On top of everything your host company offers, as a Tech Talent Cymru graduate you will receive: Dedicated training before your placement begins, so you start ready to make an impact Ongoing mentoring throughout your placement, from people outside your day-to-day team Unless you choose to opt out, applying for this role also means you’ll be considered for future opportunities on the Tech Talent Cymru programme, so one application could open more than one door. Requirements Essential A degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Mathematics, Statistics, Physics, Engineering or a related discipline Experience handling and visualising data Programming experience, ideally in Python A strong interest in AI and how it can automate data processing and analysis Clear communication skills, with the ability to understand the needs of scientists and engineers Organised and proactive, and comfortable working in a small team Eligible to work in the UK Desirable Experience with JMP or other statistical analysis software An interest in semiconductors, materials science or physics Experience building automated reports or dashboards
