About the role

We file this job under Data Engineer, by the work the posting describes.

Data engineers build and run the pipelines that copy data out of apps and outside services into a warehouse or lake, and fix them when a source changes or a load fails.

Expect SQL, Python, a cloud platform, a scheduler such as Airflow, and often tools for large data such as Spark or Kafka.

An analytics engineer works one step later, turning the raw data a data engineer lands into clean tables people can query.

Job Title

Graduation: Building a latency impact framework for the data layer

Job Description

Assignment type: Graduation (internship is possible, only if you are persuing a master)

Start date: February 2027

Assignment duration: 6 months

Location: Veghel

Education level: Bachelor / Master

Desired study: Data engineering, data science, software engineering, computer science, business IT & management

Language: Dutch / English

Description of assignment

Within Vanderlande, we are currently building a new backbone for applications to reliably communicate its data with one another. It establishes common standards for how messages are structured, exchanged, understood, and versioned. Whilst reliability is imperative, we also must satisfy certain latency demands. As this new layer (the Data Layer) is being built, we increasingly want to add more features and functionalities to it. This would expectedly impact the latency of the messages flowing through the Data Layer. Currently, we don’t have any insights in the latency impacts of these updates. The goal of this assignment is to first research what changes impact our latency, and by how much. Then, to set up a framework that essentially shows the (latency) costs of a new feature before implementing it. Scope increases/decreases may naturally be discussed.

Department description

The Central Data & Analytics department provides Data Analytics products and services (incl. governance) to the entire Vanderlande Organization (mainly internal customers). It is a federated organization, meaning that we centrally set a standard, which is adopted and implemented by decentralized franchises within the business. Next to the analytic platform, we have been building an abstraction layer for transactional data. This data layer will form the backbone of all inter-application communication within Vanderlande.

Tasks/responsibilities

  • Join one of our DevOps teams and actively participate in all standard Scrum events
  • Contribute to the development and enhancement of the new Data Layer technology
  • Demonstrate a proactive and entrepreneurial mindset within the team's daily operations
  • Execute your assignment in close alignment and collaboration with the team's ongoing work
  • Share insights and findings to provide valuable input on adjacent topics within the Data Layer Team
