About the role

We file this job under Data Leadership, by the work the posting describes.

Data leaders run data teams or design how a company's data fits together. Managers hire, set priorities and answer for whether the data work pays off; architects choose the systems and the shape of the data.

Expect years of hands-on data work, experience leading people or projects, and the ability to explain tradeoffs to executives.

Unlike a senior engineer or analyst, most of a data leader's week goes to people, planning and decisions rather than building.

We're making energy fair, clean, and simple for all using technology.

Octopus Energy started with a bold idea: to build Britain’s first truly digital energy supplier. By combining world-class tech with brilliant humans who care deeply about customers and driving the renewable energy transition, we made it happen and in 2025, we became Britain’s largest energy supplier.

Octopus Energy Group is a global energy transition collective. 10 businesses working across 4 continents to tackle energy transformation at nearly every front.

And we constantly push to make energy better. Tirelessly campaigning for fair protections for customers. And building innovative technologies that forge a path to a green energy system.

We’re made up of 10,000+ authentic, committed people working around the world on stuff you'd never expect. We're united by a shared goal: to drive the global green energy revolution. Read our Spotlight series to meet some of the team.

About the role

You and a group of strong analysts will be generating insights to guide Octopus’ commercial decisions.

You will be leading the UK data commercial team and guiding global cooperation in this critical area.

You will act as a strategic business partner to Commercial, Sales, Marketing and Energy Markets teams, combining hands-on technical expertise with strong team leadership.

What You'll Do

  • Lead UK team: Lead, set priorities, coordinate and review the work of a high-performance team of commercial and marketing data analysts.
  • Strategic analytics: Use data to guide our understanding of our customers and our competitors. Impact our UK and global strategy through insights presented to the senior leadership team.
  • Pricing operations: Enable us to react quickly to the ever-changing energy industry through smooth price changes, ensuring we offer good deals for our millions of customers and comply with regulations.
  • Metrics: Help people all across the business understand the key drivers of their operations through well-defined KPIs and intuitive dashboards. Examples of metrics include seeing why people churn, performance of marketing campaigns, lifetime value calculations etc.
  • Global cooperation: Prioritise and coordinate the data teams supporting Octopus’ operations globally, balancing local needs with global opportunities.

What You Have

  • Experience as a manager of a high-performing data team.
  • Hands-on expertise with modern data platforms and analytical tools (especially SQL and python - see our full stack below).
  • Passion for both hands-on data work and leading teams to deliver insights.
  • Strong communication skills to influence non-technical stakeholders and senior leadership.
  • Strong commercial acumen, preferably in pricing, margin optimisation, and/or growth analytics.
  • A track record of delivering actionable insights that drive measurable business impact.
  •

    Our Data Platform Stack

We employ software engineering best practices to design, test, and deploy our data platform and services using the below technologies:

  • Streamlit for interactive data applications
  • Airflow / Orchestra for orchestration
  • Kubernetes for application deployment
  • CI/CD with GitHub and CircleCI
  • Infrastructure on AWS, deployed with Terraform / Spacelift

Why else you'll love it here

• Wondering what the salary for this role is? Once you're in the interview process with one of our recruiters, it's something we always cover as we genuinely want to match your experience with the correct salary. The reason why we don't advertise is because we honestly have a degree of flexibility and would never want salary to be a reason why someone doesn't apply to Octopus - what's more important to us is finding the right octofit!
• Octopus Energy Group is a unique culture. An organisation where people learn, decide, and build quicker. Where people work with autonomy, alongside a wide range of amazing co-owners, on projects that break new ground. We want your hard work to be rewarded with perks you actually care about! We were named the UK's top company to work for in 2025, and we ranked in the top ten in the Sunday Times Best Places to Work 2026.
