Demand for Data Engineer roles

New Data Engineer postings at the employers we follow are up 8% over the last 5 weeks compared with the 5 before.

Weekly new Data Engineer postings at the same employers, from the week of August 17 to the week of October 26. The fewest in a week was 839, the most 1,314, and the latest week had 1,086.

About the role

We file this job under Data Engineer, by the work the posting describes.

Data engineers build and run the pipelines that copy data out of apps and outside services into a warehouse or lake, and fix them when a source changes or a load fails.

Expect SQL, Python, a cloud platform, a scheduler such as Airflow, and often tools for large data such as Spark or Kafka.

An analytics engineer works one step later, turning the raw data a data engineer lands into clean tables people can query.

Bring more to life.

Are you ready to accelerate your potential and make a real difference within life sciences, diagnostics and biotechnology?

At IDBS, one of Danaher’s 15+ operating companies, our work saves lives—and we’re all united by a shared commitment to innovate for tangible impact.

You’ll thrive in a culture of belonging where you and your unique viewpoint matter. And by harnessing Danaher’s system of continuous improvement, you help turn ideas into impact – innovating at the speed of life.

At IDBS, we are at the cutting edge of providing innovative software solutions and services that empower scientists and researchers to accelerate their discoveries by helping them design, execute and orchestrate processes, manage, contextualize and structure their data and gain valuable insights throughout the drug lifecycle, from R&D through manufacturing. We work with 80% of the top 20 global BioPharma companies. Our customers engage in groundbreaking work, from pioneering biological research to developing new therapies and medicines. Join us at IDBS to continuously grow and make a real impact, working alongside passionate colleagues who care deeply about our mission and each other.

IDBS is seeking a Product Owner, Data Platform to own the data foundation of our scientific informatics platform. Our mission is to help life sciences organisations capture, govern and reuse scientific data so that discoveries move faster from the lab bench to the patient, and the Data Platform is where that mission starts.

This role combines product ownership with deep fluency in modern data architecture, scientific data modelling and regulated data integrity. You will treat scientific data as a first class product, owning the full supply chain from instrument and edge ingestion, through modelling and governance, to exposure for AI, workflow, analytics and customer data lake consumers.

You will drive a critical transformation: moving IDBS from a traditional electronic lab notebook capture tool to an enterprise Data Product Provider. That means governed, versioned, high quality data products with explicit contracts, lineage and service levels, available to enterprise customers in their own ecosystems without point to point integration.

This is a senior individual contributor role operating in an Agile and Lean environment, with delivery aligned through Programme Increment (PI) Planning across multiple product streams. You will lead through influence, hold a high bar for quality, and model the Danaher Core Values and Behaviours in everything you do.

This position reports to the Head of Product Delivery and is part of the Platform Product Team and will be a office based role (based in the UK), however a remote position will be considered for the right candidate.

In this role, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Own the vision, roadmap and performance of the Data Platform, translating business and technical needs into outcome focused, INVEST compliant requirements that deliver reliable, scalable and cost effective data services to scientists, informatics leads and downstream product teams.
  • Define and track product metrics and non functional requirements, including ingestion latency and throughput, contract adherence, resilience, disaster recovery and cost governance thresholds.
  • Drive data contract and schema evolution practices so that breaking and non breaking changes are managed predictably across lab domains.
  • Identify upstream and downstream dependencies ahead of PI Planning, sequence critical path work with Product Owners and engineering leads, and communicate trade offs and runway decisions clearly to technical and commercial stakeholders.
  • Lead discovery with Data Engineers, Informatics Leads, MSAT and Tech Ops, and build design partner feedback loops with enterprise customers to validate sandboxes, data replay pipelines and governed sharing to external platforms such as Snowflake, Databricks and Power BI.
  • Establish operational quality practices: defined handling of non conforming payloads (quarantine, alerting, retry, reconciliation), monitoring and runbooks in place before handover, and fast triage of data incidents with engineering and Support.
  • Ensure the platform meets ISO 9001, ISO 27001 and GxP expectations, owning ALCOA+ data integrity, tenant isolation, access control, data residency and audit readiness with security and architecture.

The essential requirements of the job include:

  • Proven experience as a Product Owner or Product Manager for data or platform products in enterprise software, able to translate technical infrastructure into outcome focused, INVEST compliant stories and measurable data product metrics.
  • Deep understanding of modern lakehouse architecture, including medallion data tiers, transactional storage engines and change data capture patterns (for example Databricks and Delta Lake).
  • Strong grasp of scientific data modelling, including unstructured to structured transformation, data contracts, schema evolution, ontologies and provenance standards (for example W3C PROV).
  • Practical knowledge of laboratory integration and ingestion patterns, from instruments and edge collectors (for example OPC UA, AWS Greengrass) to central storage, including streaming versus batch trade offs.
  • Demonstrable experience in regulated GxP environments with ISO 9001 and ISO 27001 controls, including data integrity, ALCOA+ principles, audit trails and multi tenant security boundaries.
  • Strong cross functional communication skills, able to engage data engineers, informatics leads, commercial teams and enterprise customers with equal credibility.
  • Practical experience in Agile and Lean delivery, including PI Planning and cross stream dependency management.

Travel, Motor Vehicle Record & Physical/Environment Requirements:

  • Travel: Occasional business travel required (up to 10–15%), including team PI planning events, customer visits, or company meetings.

Benefits & Work Arrangement
