About the role

We file this job under Analyst, by the work the posting describes.

Analysts answer business questions with data. They pull numbers with SQL, build reports and dashboards, and explain what changed and why to the people making decisions.

Most postings ask for SQL, spreadsheets, a dashboard tool such as Tableau or Power BI, and clear writing.

Unlike a data scientist, an analyst mostly explains what happened rather than building models that predict what will.

Job Description:

About bp

Our purpose is to bring together people, energy and markets to power and navigate a changing world. In a time of constant change and possibility we need new talent to pursue commercial opportunities, fueled by world-class insight and expertise. We’re always striving for more innovative digital solutions, sustainable outcomes and closer collaboration across our company and beyond, and you could be part of that too!

About the team

We are seeking a commercially oriented Market Data & Intelligence professional to support the East Sales team with power market expertise, prospect intelligence, data-driven insights, and market-facing content.

This role will bridge Sales, Supply, Pricing/Costing, Analytics, and Marketing, helping the sales organization understand market conditions, identify high-potential prospects, and translate market and customer data into actionable commercial opportunities.

The ideal candidate combines strong knowledge of U.S. power markets with analytical, research, communication, and commercial skills. They should be comfortable supporting customer meetings, researching prospects, developing market insights, and turning complex information into clear recommendations for Sales.

Key Accountabilities

Market Intelligence & Sales Support

  • Serve as a market subject-matter resource for the East Sales team, with a focus on U.S. power markets and Eastern markets.
  • Supervise wholesale power markets, capacity, congestion, transmission, renewable requirements, regulatory developments, and other factors impacting retail electricity pricing.
  • Provide market expertise and analytical support during customer and broker meetings, helping Sales explain market conditions, pricing trends, risks, and opportunities.
  • Develop concise market updates, talking points, presentations, and other materials that Sales can use with customers and brokers.
  • Provide customer-specific market analysis and insights to support sales strategies and customer engagement.
  • Translate sophisticated market information into clear, commercially relevant insights.

Prospect Intelligence & Lead Generation

  • Research and identify high-potential commercial and industrial prospects within target markets and customer segments.
  • Use market, customer, industry, and company data to identify and prioritize attractive sales opportunities.
  • Develop prospect profiles incorporating relevant information such as locations, estimated electricity usage, market exposure, business characteristics, sustainability initiatives, and potential buying indicators.
  • Identify trigger events that may create opportunities for outreach, including facility expansions, acquisitions, new locations, sustainability initiatives, regulatory changes, and contract or renewal timing.
  • Develop targeted prospect lists and account intelligence that enable Sales to conduct more focused and relevant outreach.
  • Partner with Sales to refine target customer profiles and continuously identify new sources of qualified leads.

Data & Commercial Analytics

  • Analyze internal and external data to identify sales opportunities, market trends, customer segments, and commercial insights.
  • Develop dashboards, reports, and recurring intelligence to help Sales leadership understand market opportunity, pipeline, customer trends, and competitive positioning.
  • Partner with Pricing/Costing and Supply to interpret market movements and their implications for retail pricing and competitiveness.
  • Identify trends and opportunities that warrant further analysis and communicate findings to Sales leadership.
  • Support strategic projects related to market expansion, customer growth, and commercial strategy.

Marketing & Thought Leadership

  • Partner with Marketing to develop market-driven campaigns, customer communications, presentations, newsletters, and thought leadership.
  • Provide market data, trends, charts, and analysis for external marketing and sales materials.
  • Identify market developments that can support targeted prospect and customer campaigns.
  • Help develop content that demonstrates the company's expertise and credibility in energy markets.
  • Support webinars, customer events, sales presentations, and other market-facing initiatives.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Build strong relationships across Sales, Supply, Pricing/Costing, Risk, Marketing, and Analytics.
  • Act as a connector between market intelligence and commercial execution.
  • Ensure relevant market and data insights are communicated effectively to Sales and incorporated into commercial strategies.
  • Support Sales leadership with ad hoc market research, analysis, and strategic projects.

Essential experience and job requirements:

  • Senior experience in power markets, retail electricity, wholesale energy, energy analytics, pricing, trading, business intelligence, or a related field.
  • Strong understanding of U.S. electricity markets, ideally including ISO-NE, NYISO, PJM, and/or other Eastern markets.
  • Strong analytical skills and experience working with market and customer data.
  • Experience with prospect research, market research, account intelligence, lead generation, or sales analytics preferred.
  • Advanced Excel skills; experience with Power BI, SQL, Python, CRM, or similar tools is a plus.
  • Strong written, verbal, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to explain complex energy-market concepts to customers, brokers, and non-technical sales professionals.
  • Strong commercial judgment and ability to connect data and market developments to potential business opportunities.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively across functions.
