About the role

We file this job under Analytics Engineer, by the work the posting describes.

Analytics engineers turn raw warehouse data into clean, tested and documented tables that analysts and dashboards can rely on, often with dbt.

Expect strong SQL, data modeling, Git, and a warehouse such as Snowflake, BigQuery or Redshift.

A data engineer gets data into the warehouse; an analytics engineer shapes it once it is there and works closer to the analysts who use it.

The mission of The New York Times is to seek the truth and help people understand the world. That means independent journalism is at the heart of all we do as a company. It’s why we have a world-renowned newsroom that sends journalists to report on the ground from nearly 160 countries. It’s why we focus deeply on how our readers will experience our journalism, from print to audio to a world-class digital and app destination. And it’s why our business strategy centers on making journalism so good that it’s worth paying for.

About the Role

The New York Times is rebuilding how we use people data. Instead of one-off reports and ad hoc pulls, we are building governed, reusable data tools that HR leaders, HR partners, and their counterparts use to make decisions. You will help build this layer. You will work out of the New York office on a hybrid schedule.

Responsibilities:

  • You will design, build, and maintain the data models and databases that our products run on.
  • You will oversee the transformation layer from source systems into governed, tested, documented models.
  • You will turn metric definitions from the data dictionary into executable logic, so that a definition and the number it produces cannot drift apart.
  • You will build data quality into the pipeline: tests, validation, and reconciliation across sources that surface problems before team members do.
  • You will work with the Program Manager to translate product requirements into models, and push back when a requirement and the underlying data do not agree.
  • You will handle effective-dated and historical data correctly, so that point-in-time questions get point-in-time answers.
  • You will implement and maintain access controls appropriate to compensation, demographic, and other sensitive data.
  • You will document models and lineage so that all can understand why something was built the way it was.
  • You will demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world

Basic Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience in analytics engineering, data engineering, or an equivalent role building production data models.
  • You are a SQL expert
  • Strong dimensional modeling skills, and the judgment to know when to normalize and when not to.
