About the role

We file this job under Data Leadership, by the work the posting describes.

Data leaders run data teams or design how a company's data fits together. Managers hire, set priorities and answer for whether the data work pays off; architects choose the systems and the shape of the data.

Expect years of hands-on data work, experience leading people or projects, and the ability to explain tradeoffs to executives.

Unlike a senior engineer or analyst, most of a data leader's week goes to people, planning and decisions rather than building.

Join one of the UK's fastest-growing communications consultancies

At Madano, we are committed to building a better world through intelligent and creative communications. We work with organisations tackling some of the biggest challenges of our time through science and technology, helping them tell their stories, engage stakeholders, shape attitudes and influence behaviours.

From pioneering start-ups to global organisations, our clients operate across sectors including energy, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, life sciences and technology. We bring together deep sector expertise, data-driven insights and creative communications to help our clients achieve their objectives and build lasting reputations.

Our Insights team is embedded across Madano, working closely with our sector specialists, strategists and creative communications teams. The team plays an integral role in shaping our client work, bringing an evidence-based perspective to everything from initial strategic thinking through to campaign development and evaluation. This integrated approach means our researchers work on a wide variety of projects, collaborate with colleagues across different disciplines and see how their insights directly influence the strategies and communications we deliver for clients.

About the role:

As a Senior Data and Research Manager, you will help clients make better decisions by turning complex data into clear, actionable insights. Working across bespoke communications projects, you will combine strong analytical skills with a consulting mindset to understand client challenges, design research approaches and communicate compelling strategic recommendations.

Creativity and curiosity are essential, particularly in designing the analytical approaches you recommend and execute. You will take ownership of answering complex, open-ended questions: finding new data sources, developing and combining analytical methods, and exploring effective ways to communicate findings. In doing so, you will bring fresh thinking to projects and help build the team’s capabilities.

Key Responsibilities:

Client consulting and storytelling:

  • Work with clients to clarify objectives and independently translate open-ended challenges into focused questions and innovative analytical approaches.
  • Critically assess briefs and assumptions, identify information gaps and risks, and recommend practical ways forward.
  • Build strong client relationships at all levels, presenting complex findings as compelling narratives, clear visualisations and actionable recommendations to inform communications strategy.
  • Support new business development by identifying opportunities and contributing to proposals, pitches and prospective client discussions.

Research design, analysis and insight development:

  • Develop tailored analysis plans, defining data needs and methods to address project objectives.
  • Use strong Python skills to assemble, prepare and analyse diverse data, including tabular data, text, media and marketing data, drawn from databases, APIs and other sources.
  • Apply appropriate statistical and machine learning methods to support classification, summarisation, segmentation, comparison and evaluation.
  • Evaluate emerging tools and methods, helping the team adopt approaches that improve analytical quality and efficiency.
  • Ensure analysis is robust, well-documented and validated, with clear, actionable insights.

Project delivery and collaboration:

  • Lead and manage analytical workstreams and consulting projects, ensuring effective resource planning, budget management and profitable delivery.
  • Support colleagues’ development through guidance, feedback and quality review.

What you'll bring:

  • Strong, hands-on Python skills for assembling, manipulating and analysing structured and unstructured data independently.
  • Sound knowledge of analytical and statistical methods, with experience applying them to structured and unstructured data, including text.
  • Practical experience using large language models (LLMs) to process and analyse data at scale, with appropriate validation of outputs.
  • Creative, independent problem-solving: turning ambiguous challenges into research questions, challenging assumptions and designing effective analytical approaches.
  • Experience in consultancy, market research, social research, or a similar fast-paced, or commercial setting, using evidence to inform client decisions.
  • Very strong storytelling, presentation and report writing skills, translating complex analysis into clear, actionable recommendations.
  • Experience managing multiple projects within agreed deadlines and budgets, while maintaining quality and strong working relationships with clients and colleagues.

Desirable skills and experience:

  • Experience using SQL to query, extract and prepare data for analysis.
  • Experience using research and insights to inform communications strategy, planning or evaluation.
  • Experience contributing to proposals and pitches, including defining project approaches, deliverables and budgets.
  • Experience working in healthcare or with pharmaceutical organisations.

Why join Madano?

Everything we do at Madano is driven by evidence and insights. Our Insights team helps clients navigate complex challenges, make sense of information and answer the questions that matter most. We combine expertise in data science and digital intelligence to help clients understand their audiences, make informed decisions and demonstrate the impact of their work.

At the heart of Madano is a collaborative, curious and ambitious culture. We encourage our people to challenge conventional thinking, explore new approaches and contribute their ideas. While we work on serious and often complex issues, we believe in creating an environment where people enjoy working together, continue to develop their skills and have the opportunity to make a meaningful difference.

Our Benefits

As well as the basic salary, great social events and a culture of continual learning, our competitive benefits package includes:

  • 25 days’ holiday plus Bank Holidays (rising to a maximum of 30 days alongside length of service)
  • Enhanced employer pension contribution
  • Private Medical insurance (for you and your family)
  • Income Protection insurance
  • Life Assurance at 4x your salary
  • Financial support and advice
  • Travel insurance (for you and your family)
  • An annual wellness benefit of £150
  • Four-week sabbatical after every 5 years’ service.

Madano offers a range of first rate, dedicated training that enables employees to take control of their careers to become experts in their field and trusted advisors to clients.

*Some benefits are contingent on successful completion of probation period.
