About the role

We file this job under Data Scientist, by the work the posting describes.

Data scientists use statistics and models to answer harder questions, such as whether a change worked, what demand will look like next quarter, or which customers are likely to leave.

Postings usually ask for Python or R, SQL, statistics, experiment design and common machine learning methods.

Unlike an ML engineer, a data scientist's main output is often an analysis or a first model, not software running inside a product.

Job Description

Help a public university system with more than 60 campuses see where its money, plastics, and emissions actually go. Every campus reports its own way, in its own formats, on its own fiscal calendar. As our Analytical Lead, you decide how to make that data comparable, build the models that turn it into answers, and often run the work day to day as Task Lead.

What you'll do

  • Design analyses of procurement, food, plastics, and emissions data collected by many campuses with different definitions and formats.

  • Build and validate forecasting, scenario, and benchmarking models, and state each model's horizon, assumptions, and uncertainty plainly.

  • Lead individual Task Orders when assigned: agree scope with the client, set the approach, track hours against the estimate, and report status.

  • Guide the analysts and dashboard developers on your team, and check methods before work goes to senior review.

  • Explain what the data does and does not show to campus and system leaders who are not data people.

  • Use AI-assisted tools only when the client approves them, document how they were used, and verify the results yourself.

How the role works

Hours are authorized Task Order by Task Order, typically 10 to 20 per week when work is active. There is no guaranteed minimum, and the role starts only if the contract is awarded. You set your schedule within the delivery dates. Finalists will be asked to sign a commitment letter so we can name them in our proposal, and their resume may be shared with the client.

Qualifications

Required qualifications

  • Master's degree in data science, statistics, or a related field, or equivalent experience.

  • At least 8 years of professional experience in data science or advanced analytics.

  • Hands-on forecasting, statistical analysis, and scenario modeling in Python or R, plus SQL.

  • Experience preparing messy, inconsistent data from multiple sources into analysis-ready form.

  • Clear writing for non-technical readers, including honest statements of limits and uncertainty.

  • Based in the US and able to work remotely, part-time, in TechSilo's managed environment.

Preferred

  • Experience with procurement or spend data, sustainability reporting, or emissions accounting (GHG Protocol, STARS).

  • Work for a university, a public agency, or another organization made of many separate entities.

  • Experience leading several projects at once.

  • Familiarity with Power BI.
