We file this job under Data Scientist, by the work the posting describes.
Data scientists use statistics and models to answer harder questions, such as whether a change worked, what demand will look like next quarter, or which customers are likely to leave.
Postings usually ask for Python or R, SQL, statistics, experiment design and common machine learning methods.
Unlike an ML engineer, a data scientist's main output is often an analysis or a first model, not software running inside a product.

tl;dr – Why this role matters
At Scribe, data is the foundation of how we make decisions — we take it very seriously. With 5M+ users and a fast-growing self-serve business, our product team ships quickly and needs to know what’s working, for whom, and why. We’re looking for our first product data scientist to answer our most important questions about how customers use Scribe, bring rigor to how we experiment, and lay the foundation of product data science that will shape the next generation of product investments.
Hiring Manager: Melanie Herscher, Head of Data
About the role
As the first Senior Data Scientist for Product, you’ll partner with our product, design, and engineering teams to understand user behavior, identify opportunities, and measure the impact of what we build. Reporting directly to the Head of Data, you’ll define how Scribe approaches product analytics and experimentation, and set the standards that future data scientists will build on. From day one, you’ll also have the opportunity to mentor members of the data team and raise the bar for analytical rigor across Scribe.
This role is highly visible, working directly with executive leadership as well as the product managers and engineers who own each area of the product. You will transform raw data from Scribe’s 5M+ users into clear, actionable insights, and your work will be central to how we grow our self-serve business and decide where to invest next.
Key responsibilities of this role include:
Partner with product teams to drive insights, identifying opportunities and understanding user behavior, engagement, retention, and long-term trends across the Scribe product.
Own experimentation at Scribe by designing and analyzing experiments, and developing and socializing a rigorous culture of experimentation throughout the company.
Lead with hypotheses, developing and testing them with data rather than only looking for patterns in the data already in front of us.
Define and monitor key product metrics through consistent tracking, KPIs, and dashboards, and produce new datasets that unlock business opportunities.
Play a foundational role in building product data culture at Scribe through reproducible work, improved processes, and better tooling.
Help shape the team as it grows, with the opportunity to mentor teammates on statistics, experimentation, and analytical best practices.
What makes you a great fit
You’d be a great fit for this role if this sounds like you:
Have 8+ years of experience as a data scientist or data analyst with significant time partnering with product teams on products that customers love
Strong knowledge of statistics and experimental design, with hands-on experience running A/B tests and making sound calls when experiments aren’t possible
Strong technical proficiency in our tech stack – Snowflake, Sigma, Mixpanel, dbt cloud, and Looker – with expert SQL and fluency in Python or R
Customer mindset, adept at balancing quantitative data with qualitative insights to drive product decisions, and an excellent storyteller in writing and visualizations
Low ego. You care about building things and recognize that this may require rolling your sleeves up, getting in the trenches, and owning everything from instrumentation to analysis
Proactive, high-output orientation. You push insights and data onto teams rather than waiting for requests to emerge from them
Outcomes over output. You thrive on creating business value and know when to run a rigorous experiment v/s doing ugly napkin math to bias towards action
Experience building technical and semantic infrastructure to power internal natural language agents and agentic automation
Bonus Points
Experience working in high-paced Enterprise SaaS startups, with a strong self-serve motion
Experience as the first or founding data scientist on a product team
Experience creating a step-function change in a product team’s decision-making with the help of AI tooling
Experience deploying machine learning models in Production
Experience mentoring analysts or data scientists
