About the role

We file this job under Analyst, by the work the posting describes.

Analysts answer business questions with data. They pull numbers with SQL, build reports and dashboards, and explain what changed and why to the people making decisions.

Most postings ask for SQL, spreadsheets, a dashboard tool such as Tableau or Power BI, and clear writing.

Unlike a data scientist, an analyst mostly explains what happened rather than building models that predict what will.

Build a brilliant future with Hiscox

As an Underwriting Data Analyst at Hiscox, you will use data to shape how we underwrite across Europe. Sitting within the Underwriting Portfolio Management team, part of Underwriting Performance Analytics, you will turn complex data into clear insights that help our underwriters make better decisions and steer the strategy of our portfolios.

You'll work closely with the European Underwriting Management team and our country underwriting teams, delivering analysis that directly supports our underwriting goals. You'll be an active voice in the conversation on how we best deliver those goals across the business.

This is a great opportunity for someone who enjoys working with data, is curious about insurance and wants to build a career in underwriting analytics. You'll work with moderate oversight, supported by senior members of the team, and will have the space to learn, grow and take on increasing ownership.

Key Responsibilities

  • Understand and respond to the portfolio management needs of Hiscox Europe.
  • Support the pricing of large deals and new business opportunities.
  • Produce profitability studies.
  • Analyse books of business and recommend optimisation actions.
  • Deliver analysis ranging from studies on specific books for the underwriting community to outputs that feed critical processes (such as reserving) and reporting (such as the GUR and Trilogy forums).
  • Continuously improve existing dashboards and tools, making sure they stay fit for purpose and evolve with the wider organisation.

Person Specification

  • Degree in a quantitative field such as Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Data Science, Economics, Engineering or similar, or equivalent experience.
  • Experience in an analytical or data-focused role. A background in actuarial work or insurance is an advantage.
  • Strong mathematical and analytical skills, with the ability to think abstractly about a problem and solve it with data.
  • High attention to detail, with a track record of meeting deadlines and following guidelines.
  • Able to complete projects and tasks under moderate supervision.

Skills

  • Strong data manipulation skills and expertise in Excel.
  • Developing expertise in SQL and/or Python.
  • Basic knowledge of actuarial methods and statistical models.
  • Foundational knowledge of actuarial processes, and a developing knowledge of insurance products and terminology.
  • Experience with Power BI is a plus.
  • Ability to explain complex analysis clearly to non-technical audiences.
  • Comfortable asking for help and clarity when needed.
  • Ability to build rapport, adapt your style and stay flexible to build strong relationships.
  • Commitment to continuous learning and self-improvement.
  • Contribute to a strong team culture.
