We file this job under Data Leadership, by the work the posting describes.
Data leaders run data teams or design how a company's data fits together. Managers hire, set priorities and answer for whether the data work pays off; architects choose the systems and the shape of the data.
Expect years of hands-on data work, experience leading people or projects, and the ability to explain tradeoffs to executives.
Unlike a senior engineer or analyst, most of a data leader's week goes to people, planning and decisions rather than building.
The government has no code for data leaders, so these figures are for the closest group, computer and information systems managers, which includes data processing and data operations managers.

The brands on your kitchen shelf are run by people doing extraordinary work that nobody sees.
We're building the platform they run on, and a brand they'll be proud to be part of.
Confido is the AI operating system that runs cash application, deductions, trade and planning in one place for CPG brands. That means Finance, Sales, and Ops finally work on the same number.
We’re trusted by 250+ brands managing $30B+ in revenue, including Daisy, OLIPOP, Simple Mills, Idahoan, and more. We've achieved best-in-class growth and recently raised a $55M Series B led by Insight Partners to accelerate our momentum.
If you want your work on shelves everywhere — and outsized ownership while you build — we'd love to meet you.
THE ROLE
Data at Confido feeds customer-facing reports, internal dashboards, and a lot of day-to-day decisions. Right now it lives in too many places and is owned by too many people. We’re hiring a VP of Data Engineering to own all of it: how data gets into our systems, how it’s stored and modeled, and how it shows up in the reports people use, inside the company and out.
You’ll be the single owner of data at Confido. You’ll manage our Senior Analytics Engineer to start, and you’ll build the team from there. Early on you’ll be hands-on. Over time, more of your time will go to hiring, setting direction, and working with the leadership team.
What You’ll Own
Ingestion. Every source that feeds our data, including product databases, event tracking, and third-party tools. You decide how data comes in, how often, and what happens when a source changes or breaks.
Warehouse and pipelines. Warehouse design, orchestration, and the infrastructure underneath, including its cost.
Modeling. One set of core models and metric definitions that the whole company uses.
Reporting. Internal dashboards and BI, plus the data behind customer-facing reports. If a number shows up somewhere at Confido, it’s yours.
Quality and governance. Testing, monitoring, access controls, and data privacy. You’re accountable when numbers are wrong, and you put fixes in place so the same problems don’t come back.
What You’ll Do
Build and lead the data org, starting with our Senior Analytics Engineer. Decide which roles to hire and when, run the interviews, and develop the people you bring on.
Set the data roadmap and explain the trade-offs to the leadership team and the rest of the company.
Make the big technical calls on architecture, tooling, and build vs. buy.
Work with Engineering, Product, Ops, and Customer teams to figure out what data they actually need, and say no when something isn’t worth building.
Set the standards the team works by: modeling, testing, docs, monitoring, and on-call.
Write SQL, review PRs, and build things yourself while the team is small.
What We’re Looking For
10+ years in data engineering, analytics engineering, or similar, with 4+ years leading data teams.
You’ve owned data end to end before, from ingestion through reporting, not just one layer of it.
You’ve built a data function from an early or messy state, grown the team, and kept it running.
Strong SQL and data modeling skills, and experience with Snowflake, dbt, Airflow, Dagster, or similar tools.
You’ve hired well, including people senior to where the team started.
You can sit in a leadership meeting, turn “we need better data” into a plan, and defend it.
You’re comfortable being hands-on now and stepping back as the team grows.
Success in This Role
A year in, there’s no question about who owns data at Confido. People trust the numbers and know where to find them. Sources are documented, pipelines break less often, and when they do, the team catches it before a customer does. Internal and customer-facing reports run off the same definitions. The team has grown, it has a clear structure and standards, and it’s planned out for the next stage.
